Finally decided to do an EB Games Trade-in

Decided to trade-in with EB games rather than waste time selling games with eBay or Gumtree.

3 psp games for $1.50 each
Wii, ps3 and xbox games ranged from $1.50 (PES 2008 xbox360) to a maximum of $7 (the sims 3 ps3).

EB deducted $3 for refurbed charge (a $1 for every 3 games traded I suppose)

All up $48 net in store credit. Grabbed 2 preowned games for $34 total and added a 3rd preowned game for $2 (part of a promo until today).

$12 left given as an EB gift card.

Not bad for a straight up transaction. No tire kickers and no time wasters.

Hope this helps someone thinking of going to EB.

Tried trading kinect adventures but the kinect hardware should come with it

  • The $1 refurb charges are for games that are scratched or missing cases.

    • +1

Yeah but they toss it on no matter what. Never traded a game with a scratch or missing anything, always hit with that complete bullshit fee.

    • I only got those charges if my games don't have AU rating label.

      • Same

  • Pretty decent considering they are all old games/last gen, the wii game prices surprised me.

Tried trading kinect adventures but the kinect hardware should come with it.

Ridiculous policy. People looking for Kinect games would already have the hardware.

    • +2

All new Kinect hardware comes with Kinect Adventures, so the theory is that no one would ever buy it on it's own.

I get that some people might lose/damage their copy and want to replace it or buy a kinect second hand without Adventures, but if they allowed trade they'd get swamped with copies of it.

    • I had the same thing with Wii Fit. They won't accept the software without the balance board…

  • Traded in the nintendogs 3ds I got with the system for $5 today.

$3 for pikmin wii seems super low

    • You should have gotten Style Boutique instead of Nintendogs. It's worth $13 IIRC.

  • +1

Wonder how much they will sell them for now

  • +1

I did a trade-in before Christmas (my first ever too), and after carefully scrutinising the receipt, I figured out how they price their trades.

You do a search on their website for what they are selling each particular game for pre-owned at the time, then divide that amount by 3, round it off to the nearest dollar, and you'll have your trade-in amount.

Or, put another way, what they give you for their old games, they resell it at 3 times that amount. I was pretty disappointed, I would have been happier if it was half the resale value, but I guess that's the price of convenience…

I traded in a total of 10 old games (some Wii and some Xbox 360), and combined with the remainder of a gift voucher, I only paid another $5 or so to get Super Mario 3D World, so in the end I wasn't really that much out of pocket; still feeling a little bit cheated though…

So the only way I could see to maximise the value of your trade-ins would be to trade when they are not having a sale (which seems to be all the time…)

    • +1

I'm surprised more people trade games in rather than sell them online if they get resold for 3 times the amount. I'm always happy to buy 2nd hand games as I don't really play/use the online features for my PS3 if they have them.

    • That's the same with cash converters too - them buying at 1/3 of what they would sell.

  • +4

What I got annoyed at when I traded in my 3DS XL for the limited edition Zelda version was mine was in perfect condition and the Zelda 3DS XL version had a dead pixel at the very edge of the screen. Not really noticeable.

Guy from EB said to me, "What's wrong with it? Are you returning this?" Trying to say the one I'm trading in is in perfect condition. I was going to say, yeah it's in a better condition than the one I bought here. But I didn't.

You should receive MORE trade value if your system is in PERFECT condition. I traded it in with everything inside, even sealed AR cards. No scratches and perfect screen! The exact same stylus and the SD card that came with the Zelda version.

While my niece at the time without me knowing got a pre-owned 3DS from EB games that had this poor quality third party stylus, in okay condition and no AR cards. That person probably got the same trade-in value as me.

For a store that prides themselves on "specialist knowledge" in video games, they sure look like they have no idea when real gamers walk in.

    • +3

What do you consider a "real gamer" and how are they any different to others who walk in to EB to buy something?

EB wants to make money. That's what they prioritise. The people who spend lots of money are rewarded through their EB World promo, that's who EB (rightly) cares about acknowledging, they get extra trade-in credit and other bonuses too.

      • +3

Lvl 4 20% extra, I'm so proud of spending $9.5k in there :P

        • +1

wtf… im level 2 or level 3, dont know, dont care… but if i have to spent 9K to get to level 4 then they can shove it. id rather shop around and save my cash instead of being drawn into a futile rewards system… :-\

        • +1

I price match every time, I never pay top dollar and usually buy overseas. I have however bought a PS4, 2 x PS3, 2 x 360, 4 x 3DS, 1 x WiiU and god knows how many games in the past 18 months.

        • +4

Jesus you could have bought the store. What the hell are you doing on ozbargain?

        • +1

Finding the cheapest prices to price match ;)

I have two kids who also game on their 3DS's, one XL for me, upgraded them to XL during good deals etc

      • It's obvious to those who play games on a regular basis, EB throws the philosophy around that they are a specialist games retailer (which they are) that have specialist knowledge (some do) when it comes to games. I have even asked the employees there why they charge higher prices than say JB? And the reply is we're a specialist store and you receive "informed advice" on games and what systems to purchase. I think this is a very poor excuse to charge sometimes $30 more for a game.

This is not directed at "real gamers" (what I consider a real gamer are those who play games often and have a fairly good amount of general knowledge of the industry, this means all consoles, popular games, current news and what's coming out), but EB is geared towards parents (some parents know their stuff which is good) who might not have any experience when it comes to gaming. They don't even know about price matching. I see this first hand. Especially mums who want to make a good decision on a game or system to buy for her son or daughter.

But making money is EVERY companies objective and my point is based on EB being a specialist store. So if you're a specialist store then act like you know about the worth of trade-ins.

EB World promo? Sure, I'm still level 1 and have spent $1K since joining. They reward peanuts for the amount you spend!!

As a side note, I spent $200 on gift vouchers for Christmas gifts and I couldn't use my EB World card because it's supposed to be used for when they spend the gift voucher!! LOL, well done EB, I understand the logic, but that's poor customer service!

        • If you work the system right at EB you don't come out any worse than you would buying elsewhere. I only ever price match the cheapest competitor, I then get a great return policy and I try to maximize my trade ins by only trading in when there are promotions on (30% extra for tradungbin against Steam credit + 30% EB World lvl 4 = win)

        • This too. I prefer to trade/buy from EB (I always price match), cos I really don't like the general staffs attitude in JB towards video games (And trading them in etc).

I'm only level 3, unlike this guy, but you do not have to spend 9k to get to level 4, you get things like double the carrots for pre ordering etc. And to be fair, the point of it having higher discounts is because it is harder to get. (Remember you can get level 3 for a year with a 30 dollar game informer sub).

        • Yeah I'm pretty sure I never spent $9k, I have traded quite a lot in.

        • I agree, EB is pretty good in terms of how you go about it.

  • +3

i would rather sell them on eBay and offer local pickup

    • That's what I do - I also buy 2nd hand games on there as well.

  • -3

im guessing only high school or uni students are doing this trade in, cause nobody who is working professional fully time would waste their efforts on trading in 14 titles for a $48 credit gain..its just not on.

    • I usually do, I just hate having huge piles of old video games around my house.

  • +1

why you dont list them in ebay as an auction starting from $0.99 ?
always I got more than EBgames offers and at least I can spend the money anywhere I like and cost $1.40 to ship them by prepaid envelops.

    • I tried selling on gumtree but no response even at $5 each! Don't want to ebay because of the fees and the postage cost will basically offset the difference. And EB had that preowned offer that I grabbed straight away using the store credits I owned. Also, supporting EB this way will let us see $199 ps vita deals and $4 t-shirts.

      • Just send the games as a letter. Cheap as chips.

  • 2 of the very best Wii games for $7? That's not fair.

    • Didn't like pikmin that much, played like twice for not even an hour tops total and that's it. Fifa 10 cartoonish graphics, while sonic is not as fun. Little kings story was fun for a while but got bored. I still have Wario Smooth Moves, Mario Kart, Metroid Trilogy and NBA 2k11 which I still play.

  • I've never bought or sold anything at EB. I prefer my rectum intact.

Selling/buying scheme sounds like Cash Converters (may have changed but use to be buy at 1/3rd current retail price, sell at 2/3rd current retail price).

  • +1

Have you tried trading in your games at JBHiFi? I remember last time it gave me more than what EB offered.

    • +1

I don't think JB will accept my games as theyre old and mostly crap

  • +2

I sold Pikmin 2 for the Nintendo Wii for $50 on eBay last week (it's a rare game)… I hate to say it, but you got ripped off.

  • +2

Why didn't you just take the box of games to a prawn shop . eB games is a rip off I rather just donate them to kids across the road the.

    • +7

You there! How many prawns will you give me for this box of old games?

      • +2

I'm sorry sir, if you can't produce your fishing license I'm afraid we can't accept your trade ins.

        • +1

          sorry pawn :P

        • Get a word wrong on OzBargain and that's what happens. Quite entertaining tbh.

  • +1

Its hit and miss with EBGames

Here is the killer trade I made when EB was offering 50% console trade bonus towards the PS4.

I beleive the deal was 50% extra on consoles only and 30% game only if you trade more than 8 games but the guy behind the counter stacked the bonus (I think because he didnt understand the deal) and gave me 80% bonus on the total trade

    TRADE PREOWNED - PO-TRADE 360 SLIM 250GB HW $182.00
    TRADE PREOWNED - PO-TRADE 3DS HW $116.00
    TRADE PREOWNED - PO-RESIDENT EVIL REVELATIO 3DS $15.00
    TRADE PREOWNED - PO-MARIO KART 3DS $26.00
    TRADE PREOWNED - PO-LA NOIRE PS3 $7.00
    TRADE PREOWNED - PO-ZELDA OCARINA OF TIME 3DS $28.00
    TRADE PREOWNED - PO-MAX PAYNE 3 PS3 $10.00
    TRADE PREOWNED - PO-METAL GEAR S4 GUNS/PATR PS3 $12.00
    TRADE PREOWNED - PO-SW FORCE U2 360 $10.00
    TRADE PREOWNED - PO-LEFT 4 DEAD 2 360 $13.00
    TRADE PREOWNED - PO-SPLINTER CELL CONVICT 360 $8.00

    Total = $427.

And I got double carrots on the lot :-)
    Thanks EB :-)

Sacrilegious that you traded Mario Kart, Ocarina Of Time and Metal Gear Solid 4.

Apart from that similar to me. I think I traded the 360, a pile of PS3 and 360 games that came to $650.

      • I sold the 3DS so they naturally had to go with it.

I sold all my PS3 because I have gone completely digital for my PS3 (mainly because the drive has failed :-P)

  • 1st party Nintendo games never go down in price
