Replacing remote central locking key + fixing rust spot

Hi everyone, just hoping for some suggestions for an inexpensive fix for the following problems for the used Toyota Echo I just bought:

  1. There's no remote control key for the central locking. I'm assuming these are horrendously expensive to buy from Toyota. Any cheaper ways of replacing these?

  2. I noticed a small nick of paint missing on the edge of the door which has rusted. I know rust is bad and will spread. Is there any way of getting rid of it and painting it without spending a fortune? I'm not very handy, so doing it myself is probably not an option. Do panel beaters have a cheap and nasty option?

Cheers

    1. has it got remote central locking installed? if not, you won't be able to get a remote for it - unless you install an alarm with a remote lock function. I think from memory, some cheaper spec cars have central locking, but driven by the key being inserted into the door (and not by the transponder remote).
    2. How big is the rust spot and how deep is it? if it's surface rust, use masking tape and mask up the edge of the paint work, then hit it with some sandpaper (making sure u don't sand the paint). If the spot is small enough, and you have a car with a common colour, any spray paint will do. Example - if it is silver, buy a cheap $3 can of silver paint and a fine arts and craft small paint brush ($1.50). Spray some paint into a small container (u don't need much). Then use the art paint brush and dab some of the paint onto the spot.

of course, my 2 cents worth. Do it at own risk.

    • Ah ok interesting, thanks for that.

The girl who sold it to me claims it once had the remote thingy installed, but I doubt she'd really know.

Thanks for the rust tip too, will investigate that option! :)

  • Put some rust converter on the missing paint, then paint over it as previously suggested.

If you lock the drivers door, do all the doors lock?

What year model and spec level is the car? Might help identify if it had central locking and to find spares.
