PVR for Elderly with Low Vision

Looking for a PVR, preferably with integrated DVD player for my 92YO Father in Law with Macular Degeneration.

He handled his old VCR OK, until the digital change and it is now useless.

He needs one that has an easy to use EPG, large lettering and remote with large easy to find buttons. He doesn't have internet connection.

I have a TIVO and love it, but difficult to get now. Maybe I'll have to give it to him and get basic internet connection. This is a lot of messing around and there must be an easier way.

Any experience with your elderly parents ate advice would be appreciated.

  • Are you PC savvy??….What about a HTPC using Windows 7 media centre?

  • best pvr (no combo dvd/bray) is TOPVIEW as you can IR (intelligent record) a tv series - just IR an ep and it will catch all the subsequent ones and jbhifi have them for around $300 - see if the remote suits you but thats going to be hard to do much about on any pvr

you could give him the old TVIO and you UG if the remote is more to his liking & you can do the schedualing for him maybe?

maybe UG the Tv to a TV/DVD combo at the same time?

  • I had an elderly friend in his 80's that was going blind and in a hospise situation. We tried to give him some quality of life by providing a portable DVD player. With DVDs both music and movies. His problem was not so much the on screen controls for selecting movies and such but the actual sighting of the buttons on both the dvd player and remote. Would this be the a factor you need to take into consideration also?

While I'm a diabetic and have some vision related problems The dreaded Macular Degeneration is not apparent at this time. I give you cudos and wish you success in finding the right equipment to make the old gents life a bit better.

  • something else to consider is that our digital TV has the facility to select Audio Description (ie you get an extra narration telling you what's happening on the screen). ABC TV seems to be the only one using it but it can be handy for the sight impaired. If this is of interest you need to check that the PVR supports this for recordings.
