USB 3.1 - Will existing USB 3.0 ports automatically support USB 3.1 transfer speeds?

Speaking of which, has anyone seen any USB 3.1 devices yet?

  • I thought USB 3.1 was changing the connector to work whichever way you plug it in, so I'd say that would mean the connectors would no longer be the same?

Existing USB 3.0 only ports will NOT support the new transfer speed.
New USB 3.1 chipset will be required on BOTH the motherboard and the device (e.g. portable hard drive, portable hard drive enclosure).

USB 3.1 will not be particularly useful for traditional large portable HDD's as they are mechanically limited to basically SATA2 speeds which is roughly USB3.0 speed.
