How to boost WiFi signal at my home?

I currently have Optus cable internet using Netgear CG3000 modem that Optus provided me 3 years ago.
It is currently installed in the main bedroom at the front of the house, I just had 3 roommates move in and most of the time is spent in the backyard and the signal is next to nothing out there I was told by Optus to buy a signal booster? and plug it somewhere in the house. I know nothing of these or which ones are good or not or where to buy them. So any help would be appreciated.

Bah, a true OzB would use a Pringles can antenna.

I have a Netgear WN3000RP (http://www.netgear.com.au/home/products/wireless-range-exten…), which does the job, but increases latency, so don't connect any gaming machines to it.

For web browsing it is fine and has 1 NIC in it if required.

The WN2500RP (http://www.netgear.com.au/home/products/wireless-range-exten…) is good to and increases the number of NIC ports available.

It is a pity, but the CG3000 doesn't allow use of a true WLAN extender (which allows you to connect to the same WLAN name transparently moving throughout the house, as Optus has crippled the device. We wanted to do that while living @ my in-laws and share a connection.

Your other option is connect Ethernet (possibly over power device) and place a Wifi device elsewhere connected to that, then back to your CG3000.

  • Get a $19 Router from MSY and that should help with the range.

There was just a big article in Techlife about range extenders and the like and the findings match my experience. Best avoided if possible, basically.

If you search on your modem, the WiFi on the Netgear CG3000 is shocking to start with.

My suggestion is to disable the WiFi on the unit, buy a good AC router (fastest you can), and bridge your modem to it.

In a nutshell, basically replace the WiFi on your modem with good WiFi, don't try to extend or boost what's there. You'll won't get the performance out of it.

    • I totally agree, buying booster is a waste of money.

Get new set of modem/routers from officework after price match or in MSY. It will help more than the booster plus new modem is better than old one with booster :)!

      Hope that helped :))

  • I had a WN3000RP and ended up selling it. They are not that good and you loose a lot of network bandwidth across the link. I have since been able to relocate my router to a better location to get the coverage I need.
Whilst they call them network boosters / extenders, all they really do is create a NEW network that your device will switch between…..it is not a true extension of your original Network name. ie. MyHomeNetwork is the main /original router. The extended section becomes MyHomeNetwork_EXT

    • "The extended section becomes MyHomeNetwork_EXT"

This is actually technically not true for ALL devices. Some will provide the same SSID as your main router and your devices will connect to either without changing configuration.

I've been searching the Techlife web site for the article I was reading and describes it all fantastically, but I cannot find it on-line. It reviewed about 8 of these things and told you how they operated (same SSID or different), speed comparisons, easy of use etc.

If anyone wants a bit of a read of it though, I've got the magazine here and I'm happy to scan and send the article to anyone who wants it. Just let me know where to send it. I think copying less than 10% of a magazine is still exempt from copyright? It was in my day…
