Snapdragon 800 & 10 bit video playback

I'm thinking of buying a phone or tablet with this processor, as it seems to be the best available on Android, for the purpose of watching HD video, specifically at 10 bit. Could a kind owner of such a device (Note 3, Note 10.1 2014 ed, Nexus 5, Xperia Z1, Kindle HDX, etc) please test two video samples for me to see how smooth the playback is?

They are panning scenes in 10-bit (aka hi10p), one file is 720p, the other is 1080p. I need to know if they play smoothly, or if frames get dropped.

The files are 35 seconds long, and are 17MB and 23MB.

The download link is here: http://rapidshare.com/share/C4E997285BA0DEB8A140F9802BE9C14B

Please test this using MX Player with software decoder and let me know if you notice any dropped frames (might want to try it on your PC first for comparison).

I would be really grateful if someone could help me out. I want to be sure my hundreds of dollars of investment won't be wasted…

Thanks.

  • Downloaded and played on my N9005 Note 3 4G (2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor) both run perfectly using VPlayer and MX.

    • Really? Even the 1080p one? And you didn't notice a frame drop? Not sure if you tested it on anything powerful first, but the panning scene is meant to be butter smooth.

Thanks for trying it, but I'm kind of surprised if it could handle the 1080p clip. I tried it on a S4 4G (Snapdragon 600) and it couldn't even handle the 720p clip without dropping frames. Is the 800 that much better than the 600?

      • Sorry, seems like I've downloaded the 720p twice. It does run perfectly though with no hiccups using VPlayer though there was a slight frame drop on MX during second playthrough which was probably due to me having not turned off the VPlayer app.

        • Just downloaded the 1080p and there is a noticeable drop on it with VPlayer during the panning scene but it is still very watchable to be honest. Non panning scenes were perfect.

  • dl the 1080p scene, bit laggy on mx pro im on the p605 snapdragon 800
ive dl'd 10bit of other anime and its fine, might be that particular codec.

    • Frame drops vary from scene to scene. If people are just talking, it will be minimal because most of the background will be the same. The panning scenes are what takes up the most processing power because every pixel is being changed from frame to frame.

My sample video had a panning scene for best effect, so yeah..

Are there different flavors of Snap 800?

      • Perhaps your video player may also have some say in how it runs. Have you tried VPlayer on your S3? I find it to be the best player by far. I haven't time to download the 1080p right now but I run full 1080p videos (6GB-8GB movies) on my Note 3 (through the TV when I was away over Xmas period) and never noticed any issues. These were special effects heavy action movies as well.

        • Your movies were probably 8 bit color?

I've tested it on a range of phones, including S4 4G, One, Xperia Z, they all stutter. The one phone it played smoothly on (720p only) was a Note 3 Exynos Octa. Did not have access to a Note 3 Snap 800.

Based on your word, it sounds like the S800 is at least as good as Exynos, which I suppose should be reassuring. I've got to decide now whether I want to get an S800 device now or wait and possibly hope for something that can run 1080p just as smoothly.

Thanks for your help testing this.

        • The video sample you have does look nice but do you really need that good of quality on a mobile device?

        • I prefer 8 bit because it has far better compatibility and my eyes aren't good enough to tell the difference between 8 and 10. However…

It's not up to me to decide what quality it will be in. The anime community has embraced 10 bit, so that's what I have to work with unless I encode my own rips.
