Looking into the Canon 6D - buy or wait?

I've been looking into the Canon 6D after seeing them on sale after Christmas at JB for 15% off. Unfortunately I was thinking about it too long and the sale is now gone. They had the body only for $1414 after a $200 canon cashback (which I believe goes until the end of January).

The closest thing I can find now is Georges cameras in Sydney CBD which are 1549 after the cashback - which is $135 more than what it was at JB.

Looking back on Ozbargain deals it seems JB had a 15% off cameras in September and November - the question is should I wait to see if another 15% will come up or should I just go with Georges before the canon cashback ends?

I looked at the kit with lens - but getting grey import lens from hong kong separate to the body are about $300 cheaper than getting a kit here.

Thanks for the advice.

  • As long as you know what you intend to photograph and the 6D fulfills those requirements then you should get it. Although, I think you should wait until the next sale, which wouldn't be too far away. You can always wait for something you don't need. This is ozbargain after all. If you really want it now, ring and ask if they will negotiate on price, you would be surprised on how much you could negotiate even if it's not on sale.

  • I bought one from JB during the sale. It's a very nice camera. I've bought a number of grey import lenses in the past. Had no problems.

  • Wait until end of January and see if they have another sale? If not, go with the next cheapest option asap to be eligible for the Cashback

  • I'm in the same boat.. Wished I had got the 15% and the $200… now, a bit too steep. Hoping a new special happens soon.

  • The last two sales were pretty close to each other, but I'm not confident that there'd be another one before the end of January. Haven't followed the market developments so keenly lately, but I'm wondering whether there's going to be a replacement model soon too. And my understanding is that if you don't have anything invested in lenses and such beforehand, Nikon's D610 would be a better choice for a full frame system, although a lot more expensive, especially without the cashback offer.

    • Well, it seems that I guessed wrong. JB has the -15% sale on again right now. I find it very hard to resist the 6D, again.
