  • if you are committed to surfing don't get a soft board… there are lots of good cheap fibreglass boards being imported on eBay.. My mate loves his ECS (or ESS???!?) board.. Just be prepared for a year of having your ego battered and to really learn commit to surfing every day possible.. suddenly you will be taking off on good waves and not being hammered in the white wash..
If you are keen as mustard in the 1970's in terms of getting a board I'd recommend a shorter board but still big in comparison… 6'9"ish or a 6'4" Fish(effectively thicker in the middle with the end bits rounded off..)

If you want to try surfing and not too sure if you will like it go the soft mal.. if its your calling just grin and bear the hard yards.. you will realy learn to surf and not just learn to stand on a table…

  • Soft boards can be very hit and miss. They buckle, get water-logged and don't perform all that well anyway. If you must go a soft board then pay the money and buy a large G-Board. You may even find a decent used one being sold by one of the surf schools.

A better option would be to buy a second-hand fibreglass board from a surf shop. A shop will size the board appropriately and may even buy the board back from you if you later upgrade.

Keep in mind that you will also need: leg-rope, board bag, board-wax and depending on where you live a wetsuit
