Internode so sloooow in Falcon, WA Telstra work has completed in the area- now what?

Hey all,

I have a love/hate with Internode.

Love I can usually call & get through—> hating what's happened to my once-decent connection speed…

I moved recently- about 5 mins down the road. I now am lucky to get 1-6 mbps (1 mbps in evening) where prior I was getting close to 6-8mbps with no time of day effect at all.

Internode swore it was Telstra work being done in the area & that it ought to be right by Dec.

It's now Jan. & the Telstra work has completed according to their website.

I just tested at speedtest & I am getting 5.2 at 1:30pm, weekday. It's the same as when I tested at 11pm last night.

Just for sake of argument, I tested my Boost mobile as hotspot—> 22 mbps!!! Wireless bests wired adsl? Btw- yes, very good & known healthy N Modem-router in place…I've written to Internode, but wondered if anyone here might live nearby & can tell me if this is their experience w/Internode?

Ta.

  • Do you have adsl1?

  • Not exactly relevant because completely different situation, but I had a rocking 16Mbit connection with Internode and only switched plan because I kept getting shaped and the 150gb special came along. Consequence of that change was shifting to Naked and cancelling my telstra phone line rental, the rep assured me I would get the same or better speeds. Since the changeover date i've had a sketchy 8Mbit connection with frequent dropouts. They can't work out why and want me to pay to have a tech check out my house. Absolutely nothing changed at my house, the only change was my connection to the exchange. I'm now stuck in a 2 year contract on a shit connection. So yeah, I USED to love internode but recently i've had nothing but problems. As you say though, atleast you can get through to them.

  • Is this on or off-net? If off-net, you're probably on a RIM now, that is shared by more people (way too over subscribed).

This is the most likely scenario. Type your new address in to http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au, then click on RIM information.

Unfortunately if this is the case, welcome to a 2014 with a Telstra monopoly who do not give a shit about infrastructure, and welcome to a new Government with a new communications muppet, who doesn't give a shit about improving the situation.

It will remain status quo, I'm afraid (apart from the wasted $41b now).

    • Well,

It's another day & still no reply from Internode about my query…sigh.

@Ramrunner, here's the "rim-shot" from the site you listed:

      Falcon, WA RIM

Am I sunk? I don't understand what it means, exactly?

      Cheers

  • More than likely. Looks like the Falcon network was "patched" even more than my area judging by the RIMs I can see.

Have you tried typing your address into the NBN rollout map? I know there's a lot of work going on down your way. Could be a wait, but maybe you're in the middle of the build and can get NBN soon?

ALSO to be 100% sure, I just found out an even better way.

Type your address into http://yourbroadband.com.au. It will determine more accurately. If it say how many ports available you're more than likely on a RIM. If it says ADSL2 ports available you're likely directly connected or off a TopHat. Read the discussions here to learn a lot more than I can tell you:

    • Well,

I tried yourbroadband & got this:

Falcon, WA Apparently, the phone line I have is a figment of my imagination?

Then, I tried the Telstra checker from the link you provided & it says adsl2+ is now available at my address.

Meanwhile, back at my inbox- STILL no reply from Internode's support re: my query on my speeds dropping. All I have is the "we received your mail" auto-generated thing from nearly three days ago now…more disappointed by the minute.

Guess I'll resend my email & see if anything happens. I prefer it that way because then something is done & the outcome reported vs. me on the line whilst they try to figure it out.

      • You have to click the blue link at the bottom of the yourbroadband page after you have the three ticks. This stumped me initially also. Not very obvious.

        COMPLETE I mean.

        • I did this.

          Supposedly, we can get adsl2+.

Internode finally replied: "we only promise (less than) we initially pitched to get you to sign up".

Now- another query to the all-knowing here at WP,

Do other ISP's get their speed throttled by Telstra? In other words- would I see a speed increase moving from Internode to Telstra- hardware & residence remaining the same? Some say no, others say of course…

          Cheers

        • +1

Im with Exetel, who onsell Telstra to me (no other infrastructure in my exchange), and they dont throttle me at all.

    • I just noticed that 5 blocks away, is the Mandurah South exchange! I'm currently hooked to one that is over 7KM's away…

Would shifting to the closer exchange help? Is there any way to tell?

      Ta!

      • There may not be any free lines from Mandurah South running to your house. You may be SOL.

Telstra will not tell you. The only way to find out is befriend your local telstra technician. The will know or can find out.
