Help with prospective Gym Membership

Going to see my local Anytime Fitness this Saturday with the hope of getting a decent deal on a membership. I know there was an old thread that contained some helpful info on the tricks used but I didn't want to necro that thread. The guy on the phone said memberships range from 13-20 dollars weekly but made no mention of admin/joining fees.

Are there any tips for getting those fees waived?

I'm pretty optimistic about this gym because they have olympic bars and both full and half racks, and I assume benches as well so I can start my 5x5 again after almost a year of being sloth due to moving out of home.

  • Seriously, i was there yesterday for the one near my work…

    Joining fee = $100
Keycard fee = $59.99 (one time not refundable)
Per week = $15 - $19 (depending on how long you sign for)

The gym is nice and all but the joining fee and the keycard fee kinda kills it… especially hearing from my work mate who joined plus fitness and they get no joining fee or keycard fees… Could have been a promo but i reckon these fees are all balony…

Could be different for you tho

  • Hey BlazeNinja,

The trick is to play the sales game back at them.

This article gives some good tips on what to do:

Please note while it says Fitness First, this article applies to ALL GYMs.

Hope you are OK with haggling and playing mind games!

    • Thanks for the link gonna give it read!

  • I went to Anytime Fitness last week, they told me that they would waive the joining fee but there was still the keyfob fee and the weekly cost was 14.95 per week on a 12 month contract. I ended up joining Plus Fitness for $13 a week(because I have commitment issues).

  • I'm paying ~12.67 a week (56.11/month) for my 12 month Anytime membership. I paid a $13 a week for my last years membership (+ $60 for fob). I told them that another Anytime was offering me $12.50 a week and asked them to price match. They gave me the best they could.

Because they're all franchises you can pit them against each other!

DO NOT accept their BS about >$15 per week etc. You can haggle them down!

Edit: Also the joining fee is their little bargaining chip. They ALWAYS waive it to make you feel special

  • Wow, they make you pay to use the gym and then pay to get through the door?

My local 24 hour gym ran a special that was $155 for the whole year - total bargain compared to what you've been quoted and what I was paying previously.

The article posted by Batman 101 was good and I'd used those tactics with FF before :)

Enjoy your new membership; I hope you get great health benefits :)
