Calling Australian mobile no. that is overseas

Hey guys,

My friend just flew to the US a couple of days ago and he hasn't made contact with me after 2-3 days. I'm slightly worried as he said he'd shoot me an email or call me as soon as he arrived but for some off reason, still hasnt. On top of this he has not logged onto facebook or whatsapp, so my initial thought is that he hasn't been able to gain any access to the internet yet.

My question is, is there anyway I can call his Australian number that he took with him to the US? I know that he took his iphone and purchased a prepaid vodafone card recently as he did not want to lose his number (he's going for a few months).

I tried using Skype as I still have some left over credit, but I haven't been successful in getting it to work. I doubt I'm doing it correctly (+1 433 XXX XXX). I also have access to a landline phone, but I believe its either not possible, or im typing the international code and phone number incorrectly.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

  • If his roaming service is enabled, you can just call him as per normal.

0433 XXX XXX or +61433 XXX XXX

  • What do you mean by took his number with him? Did he enable roaming? If so he can receive your call but it will cost him (lots).

If he is really on roaming, you call it the same as you would if he were still in Australia, no difference.

From a landline or mobile: 0433 XXX XXX

From Skype: Choose Australia, then 433 XXX XXX.

You can also text him, same as if he were in Australia and this won't cost him. But you won't know if he saw it.

  • Thanks for the response guys, pretty sure data roaming is off as we had a discussion about it earlier. I guess I shall just wait a bit longer.

    Cheers lads

    • No, data roaming is something else and even more horrendously expensive than ordinary roaming. Voice calls and SMSes just use ordinary roaming. WhatsApp relies on an Internet connection, hopefully via free WiFi over there.

      • Will my text messages reach him using his ordinary Australian number if he has data roaming switched off in his cellular settings?

        Thanks greenpossum

        • SMS text doesn't rely on an internet connenction; so he will be able to receive your text

        • Okay, thanks for all the help guys :)

          Appreciate it!

    • I assume so, he's using an Vodafone Australia sim card and is in the state of Georgia.

      Thanks for the comment :)
