Best Phone plan for USA Travel

Hi,

Going to the US soon (Vegas and NY) and was wondering what is the best (ie cheapest) Sim/plan out there at the moment for the US?

The trip will be for 3 weeks and ideally I would like to have a fair bit of data included for face timing, googlemaps etc..

Last time I went (about 2 years ago) I used an AT&T Data only SIM in an ipad which worked ok.. but probably will just have iphone this time.

  • T-Mobile offer a $3/day plan with unlimited data (200MB per day at 3 or 4G speed then the rest shaped). Otherwise if you think you might need more than 200MB on a given day, they have a $60/month account with 2.5GB at full speed and then the rest shaped.

  • I purchased the T-Mobile SIM Kit from Walmart for USD$39.88 + tax, and it was fantastic - Unlimited web and text, 100 min worth of calls

  • +1

I recently went and purchased the $60/month plan with T-Mobile. Sim card and activation will cost you another $10 on top, so a total of $70USD.

Also make sure your iphone is unlocked.

We travelled from LA to San Fran to Vegas and all over. Had pretty good mobile reception throughout USA except of course the dessert drives. Highly recommend it. However, 3G data was patchy at times, especially in underground parts of NY.

  • we just did exactly the same as Zenger above.

Walked into a T mobile shop, took about 15 mins and had the card and access, worked across California, Utah, Arizona etc.

    Simple and pretty cheap.

  • Red Pocket Mobile goredpocket.com uses the AT&T network. Buy the SIM on eBay for a few bucks before you go. I found it worked pretty well in Las Vegas and LA. There are several decently-priced (as in pretty similar to Amaysim, Aldi, etc in Australia) 30-day plans available.

  • I found the 'cheaper' plans in US have extra sim/data/other costs and/or you have to watch your minutes etc.

If you want to use your phone a lot and not worry about it i would recommend ATT $60 unlimited prepaid plan. No setup cost - just walk into a store , they will do it for you. Unlimited national/mobile talk and text for 30 days, really good coverage and 2gb for data and voiping home.

  • I used PagePlus for about a year in the US. They use the T-mobile network and service was good for me, but they don't have stores on every corner; they sell through local mobile phone shops and online.

  • Thanks everyone,
    I'll check them all out.

I also see AT&T have a $60 prepaid plan too

Is coverage any better through AT&T than T-Mobile? Or are they basically the same?

    • for rural its better. for urban areas theyre about the same, though att has larger 4g network.
