Carpet or floor boards?

I am needing to re-place carpet in my whole house. Want advice on carpet vs polished floor boards from anyone who has had both. Which is preferable? Your thoughts, thanks

    • …it also removes the "cheap power bill" issue! ;)

      • yes perhaps not cheap but nothing beats slab heating no matter what the flooring is :)

        • Never tried it under carpet, only tiles; but in an era of escalating power costs I'd be looking to a more economically viable heating solution…but that's just my preference.

Yes its great. Chews power though and once its broken can't be fixed.

  • I pulled up the carpets 15 years ago, and had the floor boards sanded and sealed. Replacing with carpet would have cost about the same $. There have been many accidents since, mostly the dog gulping down his food too quick and throwing up. No problems, no stress! If I had stayed with carpet, then by now I would have had to have replaced the carpet at least once. One shortcoming is the boards fade and so where you have furniture/carpet there will be a different shade after a while.

  • Went with floor boards with a satin finish all through the house and love them! They have rejuvenated the house and it looks fresher and modern. A little noisier than carpet so I have put down a couple of large rugs. Highly recommend. They do show the dust even with the satin finish but not like the gloss.

Still loving my floorboards, for anyone considering ripping up their carpets.

    • Just wondering, who do you use for the installation of the floorboard ?
I notice you are in Melbourne, do you mind sharing the info as I might need this for my next reno project.

Also do you ended up getting laminate, hardwood or the composite floorboards ?

  • The floor boards were already under the carpet so they just needed to be polished.

  • Floorboards for sure. Just gotta be careful when moving furniture etc, but much better when you have a couple kids like mine running havoc around the house !

Don't like those laminate/floating floorboards though.
