  • Anyone knows at how many RPM does this HDD run?

  • Sorry, didn't read the title. It says 5400rpm.

  • $129 @ austin.net.au

Only interesting thing is the shipping.

  • Having been trying hard to source a 500GB 7200RPM 2.5" HDD. AFAIK only Seagate makes it. However, none of the shops that I have spoken to has one in stock.

  • hmmm could be a nice upgrade for my PS3

    • I've been thinking a similar thing, but then I started thinking of getting a solid state when they drop in price a bit. Lower operating temps when not in use and faster load times.

For an external hard disk it should be fine.
Laptops should really have 7200rpm for performance unless you're one of those people that want to save the environment or require more up time on battery.

  • Had this drive in my laptop for the past 9 months. As a 3-platter drive, it's better than Hitachi's 4-platter which was the first 500GB 2.5", but not as good as WD's more recent 2-platter in terms of both performance and power consumption. Tom's Hardware has a good comparison of the three drives:

If you're just after the lowest price 500GB then I can recommend it. But the WD would be better both as a main notebook HD due to the higher performance, and as an external USB drive due to the lower power consumption (less likely you'll have to use a dual-USB cable to deliver extra power).

NOTEBOOK USERS: A quick check at the latest Tomshardware 2.5" HDD roundup shows it's one of the least efficient (W) per I/O and slowest drives amongst it's peers: http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2009-2.5-mobile-hard-driv…

500GB 5k500.b/WD5000BEVT/MJA2500BH are all faster AND more efficient. Probably cost more too.

  • has anyone bought PC parts from this store before?

Not a good deal IMO. You can get a 7200rpm 1TB for around $130
Why would anyone want a 5400rmp 8mb cache hard drive…. about $60 and might be a good deal!
Bloody rip off if ya ask me!

    • Ummm, you do realise that this post is for a 2.5" drive? Your comments seem to compare it against 3.5" drives….

You might want to reconsider that -ve vote ;-)

  • This is a 2.5" laptop HDD (not a 3.5" HDD)
i.e. doesnt require external power if put in a caddy

It's one of the cheapest (if not the cheapest) and it has free postage
I'll vote positive to counter the stupidity

  • ooops I really shouldnt post comments aftera few scotches.!!! sorry my bad.
Mod please delete my brain fart!
