No comment on the quality of the deal but…

This is why I don't go to movies. > $60 for a family of 4 for under 2 hours of entertainment. Add snacks and you're looking a $100 minimum. That is ridiculous IMHO.

Of course it doesn't seem to be hurting the movie industry anyway - who has the money to pay for this stuff?

this is so true for most cases but this is the imax after all: what's everyone else's excuse?

    • I guess going to the movies has always been expensive. This is an Imax screen so even more so. But really, $59 isn't too bad for some families and a childs memories at attending the cinemas is priceless for some!

  • Not great- you can register for their MYMAX club and get a buy one get one free voucher:
    http://www.imax.com.au/MyDetails/Register.asp

Each ticket is $20, so the total price would be $40.

    • But does that apply to Highpoint in VIC and the Hoyts Imax's?

What's the story behind Hoyts Imax? I'm guessing the screens aren't as big as "real" Imax screens, right? I know Imax has been guilty of diluting their brand.

But anyway, the "real" Imax sells a family pass for 2 adults and 2 children for $56 everyday, any day of the week, to any movie. So is this such a great deal?

  • Hoyts IMAX as itsross points out is not true IMAX they are in fact IMAX Digital

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAX
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAX#IMAX_Digital

IMAX Digital is often shown at 58ft x 28ft instead of IMAX Melbourne which is 105ft x 76ft and IMAX Sydney which is 117ft x 97ft.

    http://www.imaxmelbourne.com.au/index.aspx?PageId=25#
    http://www.imax.com.au/visitor_info/about.asp

Also as itsross points out IMAX prices are normally not that expensive when compared to standard cinema prices.

$18.00 for a movie at Hoyts
$22.00 for a movie at Hoyts IMAX

$17.50 for a IMAX movie at IMAX Melbourne
$21.00 for a movie at IMAX Melbourne (Full film)

$19.50 for a movie at IMAX Sydney

So I don't think this is a great bargain.
