Why do so many not know where the dates of posts are?

I find it hilarious when people ask when does this start, when does that start and all they have to do is look on the post page where it shows dates.

It might be better if the deal dates are in a larger font to all the other fine print in the same section as the deal dates. I know the information is there so if I'm wondering when the deal starts I check this area and spot the details eventually.

I think the deal dates are very important so making them larger or putting them in a different part of the deal post might make it easier to find the information.

I am guessing some people think that the information shoud be in the title and ask the question in the comments if they don't see it in the title.

Some of the questions could be asked by new members who haven't got used to the the layout of the page yet.

And then there is the obvious answer of, some people just don't read things properly before asking questions.

Pretty much this however it's a good point. It could be put in a better place.

Hotukdeals has it after the username, posting time. Redflagdeals has it in a similar spot

I think that's a pretty good place for it. Thoughts?

Yes, I think these pages display the information about dates in a good spot. The dates information then feels part of the deal introduction and you don't have to go looking for the valid dates.

  • thanks TRENT86 for pointing me out, [here] https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/130903#comment-1803821
I was trying to find the dates, but never thought it might be with the tags. I searched title, description top and bottom. In most of the deals, OP mentions this in title or in description, so guess I was spoiled there :)
But lesson learnt, wouldn't forget now.
PS: now I can't put the comment in hyperlink for "[here]", guess need another lesson.

Below each comment is formatting help which will show you how to create hyperlinks. For more lessons, see this post.

    • Lol I didn't mention you at all. I have been asked so many times by people when does the deal start even though the dates are on every post.

  • Two words: mobile application! My android version doesn't display them…

    • Your browser doesn't show the start and expiry dates?

      • The OzB android free app doesn't display them for me.

Browsers on android are fine though…

        • Oh right. Well, that is an unofficial app made by a third party.

Out of curiosity, why do you use the app over the website?

        • Laziness for the most part! ;)

You know you can Add a button to your home screen that brings you directly to OzBargain? That's what I have.

          Bookmark OzBargain in your browser
Go to Widgets-Bookmarks-Drag to Home Screen and choose OzBargain bookmark.

I wonder if we can create an Android app that emulates that?

  • given the current location of the deal period, unless a deal is active when posted, its title should contain the start date imo :)

    • Couldn't fit the date in the header even if I wanted to :)

        instead of:

Woolies 50% off Specials. Sara Lee Ice Cream 1lt $4.49, Kraft Easy Mac $1.99, 12 Pk Donuts $2

        perhaps consider:

        50% off: Sara Lee Ice Cream 1L $4.49, Kraft Easy Mac $1.99, 12pk Donuts $2 @ Woolies from 22/1

        ? :)

        • No need to waste date in header as date is in post, just a simple look of the eyeball and you will see it.

        • +1

          what's being wasted?

          people read headings first

hence titles should contain start date if not active when posted as well as location/state if not nationwide
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/131104

keep it simple, clear and easy :)

        • It becomes a bit tricky when stuff is automatically appended to the title. The title may be very long or the OP may have added the start date and then the system automatically adds it again.

Let's see what we can come up with.

        • Lol why would we put the date in the header when 98% of people will click the post where the date is shown, no point having 2 places showing the same dates

        • @neil

It becomes a bit tricky when stuff is automatically appended to the title.

when does this happen? i've never encountered it before

          @TRENT86

Lol why would we put the date in the header

why not include it in the title if it can fit and help others?

when 98% of people will click the post where the date is shown

          which post?

no point having 2 places showing the same dates

surely if there was no issue with the present place of the dates then there would be no point of creating this forum thread topic?

btw note that https://www.ozbargain.com.au/live only lists deal headings :)

        • I did this thread to educate people where the dates are on the page. Not only are the dates in the post but on the homepage under each post as well.

        • when does this happen? i've never encountered it before

It doesn't currently. I meant if the system did automatically append start and expiry dates it might have unintended consequences.

fair enough but prevention is better than cure :)

          @neil

          unintended consequences.

to avoid them, better not to append and instead use a different line/row :)
