Insurance - Getting phone replaced - To do or not to

Hi OzB community!!

So, here's the deal.

I am with AAMI home and contents insurance, along with a clause for portable valuables cover for both my mobile phones. Unfortunately, I dropped and broke my Nexus 4 screen altogether (touch not working either now, tell me about the Gorilla glass gimmick!)

I have two options to get the phone up and running again:

  1. Pay 170 dollars out of pocket to get phone screen and digitizer replaced.

  2. Claim the phone back from AAMI (they replace it if it's badly damaged they said), pay 100 dollars excess. Question: Is it worth getting a "claim maker" mark on my records for the phone. Would that impact my premiums in future?

Which of the two options would be more advisable, please suggest..

Thanks in advance

  • I'd say option 1, although make sure that more of the phone isn't broken too.

  • If you only have these two options strictly. Don't go with 2. But 1 not good enough either. Maybe use a shitty phone save tiny bit more get brand new for $249? Just a suggestion

    • where are they $249?

  • AAMI will bump u cost up.

  • Did you pay the optional extra to cover the two mobile phones? Mobiles are not automatically covered on home and contents insurance. The amount you pay depends on the value of the phones you want to insure.

  • +1

Definitely 1, you'll pay for that phone over and over again in your increased premiums.

  • sorry this doesn't answer your question but which place charges 170 to repair it? (exact same thing has happened to my nexus 4)
