Skylanders vs Disney Infinity

Just a question to all you ozb'ers. I was looking into the 2 franchises and was just wondering in your experiences what are the pros and cons of them.

I'm thinking of investing in the Disney Infinity sets (with a recently purchased Wii U) but they seem pretty expensive. I can't actually understand what the game is predominantly about either, even after looking online. It seems to be a mash between Minecraft (building your own world) as well as any other ordinary game with a campaign and such (although this seems to be only available in the playsets?). For example even if I bought the Frozen characters, I'd really only be able to use them as characters rather than play a "Frozen" campaign, which seems a bit sub-par.

Skylanders on the other looks like your standard fun rock'em, hit'em up kinda thing - a bit like spyro almost.

What are your experiences and which do you think is a better franchise overall?

Skylanders is quite childish and simplistic. I've sat with the kids and played a few times and grew bored extremely quickly. Haven't tried Disney so can't help you there.

    • hmm do they enjoy it a lot though? The new Swap Force one seems to add a bit of variety, adding a lot of different characters you can play around with. But yeh Skylanders looks like it's aimed at a younger demographic as you said, the premise still looks pretty fun, not sure about the variety within the game though. thanks for that!

      • They are happy to play when they get new characters, not sure if that's because they are spoiled though.

hi there- here is the comments from my ten year old expert at both games son (we have them both with lots of characters for both)
    1. Disney is the better game because it has lots of different games all within the one game. That is- each set of characters is a whole new game.
    2. If you are not a quest kind of player- then you dont have to do that at all in disney- you can just have fun building (like minecraft) and creating a world.
    3. You can also in disney create your own game- like a car racing track and get your friends to play you on it.
    4. Disney has no limits- your imagination is it
    5. Skylanders on the other hand- is just a quest with limited levels so all you can do is get good at bashing killing things.

He has completed the whole skylander game (took about 2 months to complete). Disney game- now going on one month and still creating stuff

Be advised though- he is a minecraft addict. Also of course no consideration of the costs of above (thats mums problem).

    • awesome! thanks to both of you :P yes it seems that Infinity definitely has more variety and options within the game, especially with the building mode.

Is that pretty daunting though? creating whole new levels from scratch seems pretty hard. especially with so many options and things to add, although I guess kids generally have a crazy amount of imagination so that sounds perfect for them.

I read somewhere though that you can download other people's world's, so that seems pretty cool.

The whole idea seems like a roundabout way to add "DLCs" imo, even though it's cool that your toys are coming to life. But yeh the Infinity franchise looks like it has way more potential with it, only wish there some more playsets coming out! The campaign actually looks not too bad.

I'm thinking my gripe with Disney Infinity is that despite the creative Toy Box mode, without a Playset for some of the characters there isn't too much to do with them. The unique Toy Box settings you can make are cool and all, but I'd imagine they wouldn't get up to the polished level of the Playset campaigns. And in that respect you might be better of getting those franchise games as opposed to infinity? (if that was your main intention).

Which is where I see an advantage in Skylanders, you can use those multitude of characters/combinations and play with them in the established campaign story line (albeit somewhat repetitive), as opposed to Mini games or exploring scenery in Infinity.

  • Have both Skylanders swapforce and Disney Infinity.
My child spends more time on Skylanders (if this means something). Also popular among school kids.

Minecraft - can download free lite version in Apple Store (Game cannot be saved on free version). Bought full version when it is on special..

If you have windows 8 surface, below link to download disney infinity for free.

Good Game SP the ABC Gamer show for kids gave Infinity a really good review:

    http://www.abc.net.au/abc3/goodgamesp/transcripts/s3832260.h…

They said it was better than Skylanders.

  • Disney Infinity is a money grab though if you're playing co-op. You have to have characters from the same universe to play together.

Also it was super buggy at release, not sure what the case is now.

    • Capitalism is really great. He said, with a completely straight face, and there were no Karl Marx posters up on all of his walls.

  • We had a similar decision for choice on Christmas presents.

Disney is more open world and more like Minecraft.. some kids love this but mine have never played minecraft and have hundreds of $$ worth of lego to play with for construction fun. Disney of course has instantly recognisable characters, but the Skylanders characters are cool and different can be a good thing and even though we did not have the game, my kids knew close to 10 different characters just from friends/playground before they got the game.

I think both are expensive… with the swappable ones you can get some cool combinations, but be aware you need alot of figures to unlock all of the game.. again younger kids probably don't care about getting 3 stars on every level, or unlocking/collecting all the items compared to older kids… but a tip is you only need the char to open the gate, not play it.. even the multi gate. This is more if you have figures from the older games it might save you getting a swappable one.

You can pick up some of the cheaper giants figures and they will work in Swap Force and in fact you need a 'Giant' giant to unlock a number of chests in swap force, but you can get them for about $8 or second hand.

My kids (4 & 7) are still rocking out skylanders but potentially Disney would have longer lifespan due to the open sand box side of it..

  • Disney Infinity selected figures for $9 at Big W

They have Syndrome, Randy, Barbossa, Davy Jones, Mike, and Mrs. Incredible. Not sure what would be a good price on them though, haven't seem them much lower. The playsets seem really overpried though, almost $40. I guess the idea is that you're essentially buying another "game".
