Cheap Accommodation in New York, Hotel or Apartment??

Hi,

I am planning a trip to the United States and will be staying in New York City for 7 days.

Is there any cheap accommodation available in New York City, near Time Square or in Midtown? I'm looking to spend under $150 per night if possible.

Any help on specific hotels or apartments would be much appreciated, or even accommodation services similar to wotif.com would be helpful as well.

Keep an eye on http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/hotel-deals-607/ . Lots of one off new york deals but you have to be quick.

Stay away from Times Square; you'll have a better time and save money.

    • why is that? I was told Time Square is near to all the attractions?

The whole city is an attraction. There's more outside of times square than in it - it's just full of tourists wandering around staring up at the lights.

I stayed somewhere in/around the lower east side when I was there (a few years ago now). It was a hotel that had been converted from a former crack den when the city was cleaned up. Each room had been painted/decorated by a different artist with a different theme. Very cool area, and much more interesting than a hotel in tourist town. Each to their own though.

I'd probably do more reseach into the city before you lock in a location for a hotel.

The subway runs 24 hours and is very efficient. No need to stay in Time Square.

I stayed in Long Island City last time I was there ($100/night), 5 minute subway ride to Midtown. Try Wimdu, a similar service to Airbnb.

        • oh ok, so did you still find it convenient to get to Upper and Lower Manhattan? Also, do you remember the name of the place you stayed at??

        • yeah i heard the public transport is good, however people have told me it's difficult to catch a cab back to your hotel after a night out. They recommended to stay within the city.

        • http://www.carltonarms.com/about_us.htm was where I stayed - mind you this was 8 years ago now! Didn't realise how long it had been…

It's still around. It wasn't like staying in a fancy hotel but was reasonably priced, fun, and in a pretty good location. Not sure what's good now though.

You can't walk more than a metre without running into a cab. No issues with catching cabs. You can also use Uber or town car services. However, subway is still the best bet.

          stay within the city.

The city is quite big and includes Manhattan, Queens, Bronx etc. I wouldn't stay anywhere outside of NYC in which you have to take a Metro North which don't run 24 hours. I stayed in White Plains once and that was a pain taking a 45 minute Metro North down to the city everyday and back.

  • Hey everybody, have you noticed that accommodation prices are more expensive if you book 6 months in advance? So it's better to book 1-2 months in advanced? Has anyone seen a similar pattern??

  • Check travelzoo. Try hotels even if your dates are outside the expiry listed, as sometimes it gets extended

  • I'd stick with Manhattan, doesn't need to be Times Square. It's extremely easy to get around. Doesn't take long at all. If you're staying outside of Manhattan Just Make Sure you're very close to a station. I stayed in Queens once and it was a 10 minute walk to the station which made everything a bit more irritating.
