5.5" Android 4.2.1 Quad Core 1.2Ghz Dual Sim 3G Smartphone $119.99 USD Shipped @ FocalPrice

Hi this looked a mite suspicious to me after my partner had ordered 2 phones from focal point. Below is the email she received after placing the order. The company has already taken the payment out of her account, so why they asking for all the information to verify her account transaction is beyond my comprehension.

Dear customer,
This is an email from FocalPrice.com service team
Thank you for ordering from Focalprice.com. To ensure the payment was made as per your request, further confirmation is needed for this payment.
Please kindly provide us the following documents listed below to help confirm your payment process and information. You can choose either item 1 or item 2, but item 3 is required.
1. A photo/screenshot of your credit card bill (Any previous purchase invoice will suffice). It would be better if we can clearly see both the first 6 digits and last 4 digits of your card number and the cardholder name on the bill.
2. A photo/screenshot of both sides of your credit card. For the safety of your account and card number, (please cover or black-out the CVV2/CVC2/CSC2 code) both show us the first 6 digits and last 4 digits of your card number and the cardholder name on the credit card.
3. A photo/screenshot of the cardholder's ID card/ Passport/Driver license.
4、Please confirm Authorization Form and sign it. The authorization letter is attached below. Please print it and sign it, then take a photo of it to send it with the item 1 or 2 and 3 together to us.

All the information you provided will be protected very well; do not worry about that. Thank you for your co-operation in providing Focalprice with the necessary information needed to process your order effectively.
Please confirm by return email within 7 days. If no reply received on or before the ETA date, we’re afraid we have no choice but to cancel and refund your order in order to avoid any loss causes to you.

Yours Sincerely,
Nancy.Lei))

We immediately asked them to cancel the order instead of her providing all her personal information, however, it appears it was too late as the money was already withdrawn. I am not sure they will refund it. We tried to call them but we got no dial tone or answer from the number.

what are your thought about this?

  • They are ridiculous requests.

  • I doubt they will cancel the order if that info is not received in 7 days- money is money.

DX was asking for similar info a while ago.

just send an email to their sales support.

they just don't want to get burnt by someone using a stolen card and then they send out the ittem and then the card is reported stolen and the CC comp takes back the money.

I always use paypal for focal price through my 28 deg card.

    • just send an email to their sales support.

I mean, to confirm they sent thhis and ask why they need it.

  • There does seem to an increasing incidence online of requests for extra - and potentially very risky to convey - info for people using a credit cards directly.

I certainly would never buy anything substantial through any of the China stores without using Paypal and now that the overwhelming majority offer it as an option, the burden of suspicion has switched around to be upon customers who don't use it.
    Quite a turnaround.

I suspect that when it comes to significant value items, sellers are dealing with a significant amount of credit card fraud.

I WOULDN'T have sent them any extra info either. I would have contacted them, expressed understandable concern, put the offer to them that in the event that they choose to cancel the order, that I would be willing to purchase again through Paypal if the price to pay was matched (by way of an activated one-time code if necessary).

Of the three possible things that could then have happened, either one of two of them could have represented a satisfactory outcome.

As it is, given your response to them, you may still get your phone delivered as opposed to order cancelled.

  • Well it does say: "Please confirm by return email within 7 days. If no reply received on or before the ETA date, we’re afraid we have no choice but to cancel and refund your order in order to avoid any loss causes to you."

There's a thread on focalprice.com on Whirlpool. It doesn't seem to be a scam. I'd just contact them and confirm to them that they have to provide a refund if you are not willing to provide your details as per the email.

  • I'm pretty sure this is normal, but I would still be careful. This happened to most people when they purchased from dealextreme (dx).com and it was legit.

    • The need to 'still be careful' is understating it.

Be it legit in motive or not, wherever you can, especially in a DX or Focalprice-type situation like this, you just don't provide extra pieces of information that could facilitate identity theft, by people working there - or down the track by hackers.

Sending licence images etc. is madness.

  • I will let you know what happens, either the order gets cancelled and my money returned, they email me with more information/response, they ship the phones (I doubt) or I have to fight to get my money back and no phones. I will be in contact…

  • +1
