Network Cable

Hey Guys
I have some Clipsal Cat5e cable left over from getting my house networked.

What I want to know is, is this cable ok to use for normal use? example, buying the connectors and using it from my modem to ps3, tv etc?

or would it be best to just buy a already done 1m cable from http://msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=9066

  • It's fine. I used to make my own cables because back in those days ready made cables were expensive compared to now and also I needed long lengths which would have cost me more than a spool of cable. However you need connectors and a crimper. So you may not save if you only need a few patch cables. Also you'll need some practice before you get the crimping right. A multimeter is useful to check the connectivity of the finished cable.

  • By the time you get the bits for it and make it yourself it would be easier to just go out and buy one. Unless of course you know someone that has the crimper already. Cable wise for what you have mentioned it will be fine.

    EDIT:

  • Thanks Guys

  • Would have been better to network your house yourself :p

    • Mate did it for me, he is a professional, does it does work

      • +1

Pester him to make you a few patch cables since he's got a crimper. :)

  • You can, but it's not ideal.. (or legal)
The Wire used to wire up your home is solid core, this means that it doesn't cope well with being bent or flexed.
For static items, like an xbox, or TV, that's fine, but for more portable devices where you're constantly plugging and unplugging the cable, the wire will eventually snap internally.

Commercial patch cable use multi-stranded wire which is designed to cope with flex.

Holy shit, I honestly never knew that I've been flaunting the patch cable laws for all of these years… ;)

      • You mean flouting, I think? Flaunting means to exhibit ostentatiously. Or maybe you did mean flaunt.

"Hey officer, come and check out my cool Cat-5e patch cables."

        :)

        • Good catch, you are indeed correct! :)

      • Yep.. one of those stupid laws that noone knows about and doesn't really make sense.

The argument goes something along the lines of "if you don't know what you're doing, you might electrify the telephone network (ie with 240V) thereby putting telco line workers at risk".

But seriously, if you're that inept, you probably don't have the skills to terminate a cable anyway!

Similarly you're not allowed to run network cable (even premade) through your walls or roof cavity… At least the risk there is slightly higher in that running a network cable in parallel to a power cable could generate sufficient inductive charge in the network cable to cause a fire or electrocute someone.
But doesn't seem to be a huge issue in other countries where it's perfectly legal to do all this work…

  • I'll just buy a few premade ones

  • If you must buy from Estore:
