International Travel Sim - What to get?

So I'm travelling overseas and will be backpacking around Europe. I am looking for a good and cheap international travel sim. Any suggestions? Experiences?

As I am only spending short periods of time in each place I don't want to get a local sim each time (which is what I would normally do). My girlfriend will be doing the same so if there are any discounts for calling each other that would be preferred.

I've looked at the Woolworths Travel Sim which has some decent rates. I've also found this link on one of the forums on Ozbargain which removes the purchase price of the sim "http://www.woolworthsglobalroaming.com.au/Shop/Product/Detail.aspx?ProductId=1503". But I've seen a lot of bad reviews about the call back service not working and not receiving any assistance.

Are there any non call back services that offer cheap rates?

  • Optus is $1 a minute to anywhere in the world. 50c text anywhere.

    $1/MB data.

    • Isn't this calling from Australia?

      • it's the new roaming charges anywhere in the world.

  • +1

Other option… Utilize the free Wi-Fi hotspots at bars, hotels, coffee shops, Mcdonalds etc….e.g Load Viber, Skype or get a Apple product… I took an iPod Touch around the Caribbean and Facetimed, iMessaged and Emailed to keep in contact…. worked really well and no big charges…. even took a Pocket wi-fi device but didn't end up using it….

    • Yeah I was thinking about just doing that

  • Truphone- backpacked around europe for 5 months with it. Allows you to port your number as well. Best by miles. 50c per mb most places. Very cheap calling and sms rates.

  • Lyca mobile, look into it, they're great

  • I am traveling overseas also and looking for a good SIM before I leave, only on Pre Paid.

The Optus deal does look good, much better than Lyca from what I can see, only $1 a minute and 50c per MB for data, anyone know of anything better?

    • 50c / mb is cheap? Thats $1k for 2GB!

      • Omg 20k for 40GB!

      • From a "roaming perspective" on pre paid, yep it's cheap, I haven't seen anything better, this is why people with Post Paid accounts end up with bills that cost thousands when they return home.
