Cheapest naked DSL / Broadband?

Could anyone suggest a cheap broadband plan for a flat without a phone line in Brisbane? A friend of mine is a struggling student and it'll be for only light/medium internet usage.

You mean without a phone service, I think? Naked DSL still requires a phone line to be in place. Start here:

    and do a plan search:

Also is your friend renting? There are other things to consider: She may not be able to reassign the line to naked, for example.

If your friend really doesn't have a phone line, then she has to go for mobile Internet.

No, naked DSL means no phone line is needed for the internet to connect. It is different to purchasing standalone ADSL 2+.

      Take a look here: http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/naked_dsl_isps

If you want a reliable ISP, I've heard good things about Internode - they're currently doing $60 a month for 150GB: http://www.internode.on.net/residential/adsl_broadband/easy_…. A few other ISPs will be cheaper, eg Exetel, TPG.

Naked DSL requires an inplace (phone line). It is just that the phone line is used purely for the internet, with no phone codes on it (hence, no line rental). greenpossum is correct in saying that it still requires a phone line to be in place.

Phone line/Inplace = physical copper cable connecting the house to the exchange, required for all DSL services (Naked, ADSL, ADSL2+)
Phone service = phone line 'rental', required for ADSL/ADSL2+

Nope, the definition of Naked DSL is what Morien wrote, the phone line is used only for data and there is no standard voice service.

The DSL modems used are in fact no different from those used for non-naked plans, but of course there is no need for a line filter because no phones are usable with the naked service.

exetel is cheap if not cheapest, their plan with a phone line is cheaper than their naked service
    the setup is ~$130
Although probably better to just get a mobile phone with 2gb internet from vaya or something, and use internet at school

    • Yep, mobile broadband may be a great option if usage is lighter. Just beware of excess usage charges on a plan, and expiry dates on a prepaid.

      • Not all mobile broadband packages have excess usage. I think at least Vodafone used to sell packages with throttling if you exceed the limit.

  • iiNet $59.95 100GB with calls included. Been with them 6 years and had no problems

  • the thing about naked ADSL is that it's often not any cheaper than non-naked plans, so I personally don't see the point of them, just get a normal ADSL plan and don't use the home phone.
I'm currently on ClubTelco's $25 unlimited plan, +$30 line rental is $55 a month, 5% discount every month - so I pay $52.50 per month unlimited.
