WTF AirAsia?

So I'm looking to travel to KL about April.

Checked some flights and found this:

Melb - KL - Sg = $246.02 AUD

Melb - KL only (same flight number/time/date as above) = $569 AUD

I'm seriously confused. Why do they do this?

If I take only carry on luggage, could I just buy the Melb - KL - SG ticket but then get off at KL?

(maybe I should post this as a deal instead?)

  • Yes, just book the flight to Singapore and get off at KL. Definitely no problem with carry on luggage.

Flight back would be different, you need to fly the full leg otherwise it gets cancelled…

    • Is that definite? I see stuff like this all the time.

You're right about the return flights. My friend who's a travel agent told me so when I planned to scam the system. Silly…it should be allowed with non-refundable tickets if you make your own way somewhere though because you missed the plane.

Buses in Europe were the same mess. I wanted to go to the south of France with Eurolines but licensing agreements meant they weren't allowed to dump somebody off the bus within the same country - so I went to Barcelona instead. They almost left me in France though accidentally while I was relieving myself, so you could go for it :)

    • Are you sure it will work? In one of my previous travel, my flight bookings were Adelaide-KL-Bangkok-KL-Adelaide (stop overs in KL 2X and Bangkok). I missed the KL-Bangkok flight and the airline (Malaysia Airlines) cancelled all my subsequent confirmed bookings Bangkok-KL-Adelaide for "No-show" even though I took the next flight KL-Bangkok immediately!
So check first whether Airasia will cancel all your other confirmed flights if you have a "No-show" for KL-Singapore-KL.

      • Yes, thanks for that.

I don't care if they cancel KL to SG. I only need to get to KL.

I will buy other tix (KL back to Melb) separately. So they shouldn't cancel that ticket or touch it at all since it would be completely separate.

I'm more worried about being able to get off the plane in KL and exit.

        • You should be able to get off the plane.

          1. It stops in KL, so people exit, so how will they know who is supposed to get off and who isnt. The Cabin staff arent going to be the ones to physically stop you. At absolute worst they may "suggest" you should stay on board.

I have never seen any airline check departing (from the plane) passengers tickets.

once in the airport with no checked baggage you can exit thru customs and immigration, again no checks made by the airline.

Plus as others have said, they have done the same as well.

          1. If, in the very unlikely situation someone challenges you, then you are sick, afraid to fly etc etc, but that is extremely unlikely. (but being "prepared" will help put you at ease)

As you said you are booking one way only, and making a separate booking for the return, that's one advantage of low cost carriers

BTW are you sure it's the same flight? (not that it really matters), but its very unlikely given that when i check the Airaisia site for April flights of the same value, they show different flightnumbers for each segment and say you need to change flights. Even ones with the shortest connection show a different flight number. eg 10:30 MEL to SIN (20:00) shows D7 215 and AK 719, and the 10:30 arriving 20:50 (same price) D7 215 and AK 721.

Maybe you just saw the AK719/21 and missed seeing the D7 215 flight designation. Now if AirAsia was Singapore based I would expect that the international plane would continue on, but its KL based.

  • Sometimes that happens with airlines (especially budget ones). My guess is it is dependent on how many people are booked for that particular trip.

  • Why not hold off buying a ticket until after next weekend?

There is a travel expo at Melbourne Exhibition Centre, Door two with free entry.
10 till 7 p.m. Sat and 10 till 5 p.m. Sunday on 8th and 9th Feb 2014. Sometimes companies have exclusive fare deals that are specials for the Travel Expo.

Sometimes you can pick up a fare on regular full service international flight cheaper than normal price on LCC. Worth waiting to check it out if you can wait that long. JoyV

  • Doubtful it would be cheaper than that deal though :)

  • I've missed the last leg of AirAsia flights for the same reason with no problems. As mentioned above, you can't miss other legs (arms?).

  • You woudn't be able to check any baggage of course.

  • Royal Brunei had special return full service and luggage to BKK earlier this year for $533 AU which is comparable if they offer same deal to KL at travel expo and after April 3 long haul should be on dream liner 787. A great flying experience. JoyV

  • In April there are plenty of Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur around the $230 mark if you are flexible with the date
