Be part of the huge game that bankrupted Major League Baseball pitcher Curt Schilling's 38 STUDIOS: "On March 10, 2012, it was projected by NPD that the game sold over 330,000 physical copies in the U.S. and Curt Schilling later tweeted that it has sold 1.2 million by the 90-day mark. Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee has said that the game was a failure as it needed to sell over 3 million copies to break even."

  • $6 USD is about $6.90 in AUD.
  • US address required for Amazon. You know the drill. I had no trouble entering the supplied key into Origin client.
  • Yes, it's Origin. If you want the Steam version, it's currently on sale there for $17.99 USD for us (70% discounted). It's your decision if the $12 saving is worth it to put up with Origin.
  • That's right: Steam sells this game for $20 USD locally and $60 USD for Aussie users. (Blame the publishers, not Valve. Maybe the bankruptcy administrator figured it was one way to pay back the creditors?) If you absolutely must have the Steam version and can arrange for a U.S. pal to gift it to you, it's currently $6 USD locally on Steam.

Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee has said that the game was a failure

    Dafuq? This guy knows videogames?

When Lincoln Chafee from Rhode Island weighs in on your commercial success in the video-game industry, you know you're screwed.

    • His tie was a failure.

The state of Rhode Island gave a US$75 million loan towards the development of this game, and only received a tiny fraction of it back — 38 Studios went bankrupt owing $150 million to 1000 creditors: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2012/11/rhode-island-accuses-3…

        Holy sh*t.

Cue Indie developers flocking to Rhode Island en masse…

(Btw, GTA IV cost 100 million but that game, plus it's extensive marketing campaign, showed it. Where on earth did the 75 million go?)

        • Where on earth did the 75 million go?

It's been a while since I read up on this case, but I believe the Kingdoms of Amalur was initially planned to be an MMORPG. Which can be a rather expensive undertaking — Bioshock/EA spent $200 million on SWTOR. :)

          What a great investment that was… 12 months later and it's F2P.

Was an enjoyable game for a cheap price but would have failed even harder as an MMO.

  • I played it on PS3. Camera gave me a serious headache. Game was unplayable.

It's pretty bullshit that us Aussies are the ONLY ones who are being charged these ridiculous prices ($29.99 USD standard price before the discount, then it jumps to $59.99 USD standard price AND THEN the 70% discount is added). Meanwhile across the Tasman Sea, even Kiwis get to enjoy the $5.99 price that their US counterparts get.

I can buy the Steam version including all 3x DLC packs for $12.50 USD (cheaper than buying on Amazon) - add me on Steam if you want me to buy you a copy.

  • Played this ages ago, didn't think much of it. Skyrim was out around the same time and was 10000000000000 times better.

  • Currently $5 USD on Amazon, for STEAM version: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IA7VCBG/
