My Letterbox has been picked and mail being stolen, where can I buy a good lock?

Hi guys,

Thanking you in advance for looking at this topic. My Letterbox at our unit is regularly being picked by some thieves :-(

Few months back I noticed that our letterbox was open and I gave benefit of doubt to myself that I would have forgotten it to lock. But since then, I've been regularly keeping an eye to check if it happens again.
And it did, so I changed my lock but within 2 days it was picked again. My next door neighbor's letters were stolen which contained letters from bank & credit cards etc. I now have only option to purchase PO box at post office and change all my addresses i.e. bank, RTA etc to PO box. Before I do that, can anyone kindly suggest a place where I can buy a secure lock i.e. something which can not be picked easily for the letterbox. I purchased one of 'cam lock' from one of the lock smith's which fitted my letterbox but now I think I need to invest in a better lock also.

Thank you once again.

Deepdag.

put a spy cam in your mail box, connect it to your wifi and when someone opens your mailbox it should take a picture or video and send it to your computer or email

Make sure you carefully check any statements you get, it is unfortunately quite easy for an identity theif if they have access to your mail.

  • Put a small parcel in your mailbox with some white powder inside. Write on a note inside:

    "Dear Mailthief,
Prepare to die a slow and painful death from the parasites in this parcel.

    Warm Regards,
    Me"

  • good locks can be bought from any hardware shop, you just have to spend extra money

    • Thanks ilostnemo.
I tried local locksmith & Bunnings but not much luck. Will keep trying.

  • Sad that it's come to this. I would also ring your financial institutions and ask them to put a note on your account that your mail has been stolen encase of any unusual account requests.

    • You make a valid point. Will do that soon. Many Thanks.

    Practically impossible to pick?
    Get this:
    Magnetic padlock on eBay

Works out ~$27. They'll sell you a bulk lot of six ~$22 each.

Now boltcutters, on the other hand…

    • Thanks mcmonte.

I will ask the seller if I can put it on a letterbox.

If the letterbox hole is too small for the shackle, just get a decent hasp kit from Bunnings or wherever and (properly) bolt that to the letterbox. Padlock should then fit.
