I stumbled one day on a little known fact—there was an active anti-Communist insurgency in Romania. Most Romanians didn't even know it was happening, so strictly the Communists controlled information.

This novel is my imagining of a family from that insurgency that struggles with the grief of what happens when the Communists finally crush their movement in 1962.

Stefan and Andrew Valquist had a strange childhood. Their mother, who claimed to have fought as an anti-
Communist insurgent back in Romania, taught them everything she knew before her death.

Andrew Valquist is just back from Iraq when he and his twin are suddenly racing to Romania on an adventure that will threaten their lives and, they'll soon learn, the free world as we know it. And it's all somehow connected to their mother's mysterious past.

  • I'll give this a whirl - Romania is a fascinating country.

    • My wife is a Romanian-American and my mother in law still lives there. Since we're both school teachers, we spend our summer there every year. I've had to learn the language (my mother in law knows now English). It really is an enchanting place. It's commonplace in the countryside to see horse-drawn carts everywhere.

This novel is my tribute to what has become my second country. These people suffered through a hell under Communism and emerged resolved to build a better future for their children. And the practice of religion you'll see in the book is a strong current today in that country. When I attend Church there, the sanctuaries are full, despite the persecution they endured.

      Thank you for your interest.

  • Thank you for this, Keith.
When I've finished reading it, I'll post a review on Amazon.

  • Any free lessons on Udemy for Romanian? Or can one pick it up with a knowledge of Italian?

    • I have a course in Romanian that I am getting ready for Udemy. One can certainly pick it up if one knows some Italian.

The course I'm making will be a video version of free resources I already have on my website. I have lists of vocabulary, broken down into five phases of difficulty, complete with MP3 files of Romanian pronounced by a native speaker (my wife)

Here's the Romanian page on my website, where you can find these free resources.
