Battery for Sony Nex Camera (NP-FW50 InfoLithium)

G'day
Recently bought a Sony Nex6 camera and want to get a spare battery or two for it. Sony retail price is an astounding $99 for an NB-FW50 Infolithium 1030MAh. I've read about generic alternatives but so far am unconvinced. Has anyone found alternatives they can recommend, or a cheaper source of genuine Sony's? Cheapest I've found on Ebay are ~$60. Thanks.

By the way, for anyone interested I have just received and fitted my Larmor LCD screen protector (Japanese optical multi-layer glass, ~$20 landed) and am very impressed at this early stage. Easy to fit, excellent clarity and minimal obtrusion (0.5mm thick).

  • I got a generic off eBay for my NEX-7 never had a problem, it was around $10.

  • Thanks. Interesting that B&H Photo can sell genuine Sony for $US38. Yet another hole in Gerry Harvey's argument.

  • Would not touch any of those Ebay 'Sony' batteries.

  • Where did you get your Larmor? Looks good, but I'm only seeing $15 + $45 shipping..

    • Ebay, here: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GGS-IV-LARMOR-self-adhesive-glass…

Post was quick, included a small cleaning coth and screen wipe. Very simple to fit.

      • Thanks, realised I didn't have worldwide selected on eBay and was missing a heap of them..
In the end took a punt on this one http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/330892664018 for US$14.50 free ship.

        • BTW, just received my Larmor order today (11 days from order). Yet to fit it, but looks the part..

Just thought I'd mention, they sent their advertising for their own store as they do, which they are selling the same item for US$13.99 free shipping, and can also get 5% discount with a Facebook like. All the other camera models available there also (varying prices). Doesn't come with a cleaning cloth though, just the wet wipe.

i have bought several generic batteries for various digital cameras off ebay over the years and never had a problem.

    • Me too (Olympus cams)

  • I bought a sony FV100 for $17. Tooks 2 months to arrive. I was expecting a shitty third party battery but it was an original sony one!!! HA!

    • Possible, happy days if it is, but there are plenty of fake Sony batteries out there. As they say if it looks too good to be true then chances are it is.

      • I can't agree with you there - brand is irrelevant in my eBay battery-buying experience (Olympus cams, Asus and Toshiba laptops). Cheap, unknown Chinese generic manufacturers have consistently provided products that equal or better the OEM gear.

        • sometimes. I have bought 3rd party batteries that I took one look at and chucked it. I do not want to risk using that in my camera.

Sony batteries are a bigger risk. The batteries have a chip in the battery. some third party batteries will not work.

And yet the buzz across the web generally says in this case (NP-FV50 for Sony cameras) that many generics work but invariably don't last as long (despite claimed higher capacity) and probably won't have the longevity of the genuine Sonys (yet to be tested). They weigh less and give less shots, some are very hard to fit into the battery cavity and some give incorrect battery responses. Plenty of happy generic users out there and quite a few who have had to throw them out early but as they said 'what the heck they cost me far less than the genuine'.
