This just popped up in one the ads here. I reckon with our OzBargainer skills we can make this offer worth it. How much do you reckon you could save in one hour?

I guess in winter, you could crank all the electric heaters and in summer A/C?

Run washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, charge my Tesla?

  • And you'll get a big bill & make no difference to the average… exactly what they want.

    From the T&Cs you posted:
Savings are calculated using average appliance usage by Victorian households, and not individual usage profiles

You don't get what you use back, just what the average, asleep Victorian uses.

Those T & C point to this statement:

Victorian households could save on average over $230 per year^ by taking advantage of Dodo’s Hour of Power.

I've been reading up on this an apparently you need to have a meter/be in an area that is capable of having time based power rates. Depending on the company, they have different times for peak, off-peak, shoulder etc. So they can read usage during the times of the day.

However, my average usage is 9.23 kWh per day. My current cost for that usage is $2.85 per day. If I can shift 20% of the usage to the 6AM-7AM timeslot then that would save about $.56 a day or roughly $17 in savings a month. It's also all dependent on the rates Dodo charges compared to elsewhere. I think for my sanity, it might just be better to find an all around cheaper provider.

      • It won't matter / you don't need a meter that is capable of having time based power. The T&C's you posted say "Savings are calculated using average appliance usage by Victorian households, and not individual usage profiles".

Again, that's not for the power hour that's for the the statement from the Dodo bird (LOL) on the bottom right that says :

Victorian households could save on average over $230 per year^ by taking advantage of Dodo’s Hour of Power.

The ^ points to the average thing in the T&C.

You will save nothing as the Victorian period formally began in 1837 (the year Victoria became Queen) and ends in 1901 (the year she died) they did not have electricity then so your saving will be nil.

The above is what I expect from dodo.

  • Finally, found a document with more explanation:

  • If I got this, I could fill my living room with old freezers from gumtree, and freeze enough blocks of ice to make myself an igloo.

    • You'll need instant freezers to freeze water in an hour.

Was just about to post the things an ozbargainer could do.

    1) Run washing machine / dryer — bonus if you don't set it on timer and actually get up and turn it on

    2) take long hot showers (winter time) — beware that you should finish your shower 20 minutes before 7 as water in the heater takes time to heat up

    3) Vaccum the house (and disturb the neighbours). Bonus points if you're a cleanliness freak and can do it everyday

    4) Iron your clothes — keep ironing all clothes whether you use it or not

    5) Charge your rechargeable batteries — warning — may shorten life of battery due to weird recycling durations

    6) Turn on heater or A/C at full blast (depending on weather) and pray that it lasts the whole day

Can't think of anything more right now…

  • charge batteries and use then in the other hours of the day, to run your appliances.
