Advise for Laptop backup

Hi tech savvy @ Ozbargain

I need to back up my laptop regularly (i.e. 3x/week) as it contains some important data and software
Just wondering is there any system/way that can automatically backup into Backup drive through WIFI at home?

Laptop —> Backup software —> WIFI (automatically backup whole HDD) —> Backup drive/server

Thank you for your help

  • Will be good to know what sort of hardware you're running. What kind of machine are you storing the backups ? Is it a NAS? Computer running Windows server? Linux?

    • My laptop is Toshiba Satellite P50t-A01C (Intel® Core™ i7 processor 4700MQ (2.4GHz - 3.4GHz, (Quad Cores) 1600MHz FSB, 6MB L3 Cache) using Windows 8.1

I dont have windows server at the moment..

Can you please explain a bit more about NAS?

      Thanks scrimshaw

NAS is Networked attached storage. Lots of explanations if you search "What is NAS" on Google, but the easiest way to understand it is that it's a computer that acts as a file server and it allows other clients on the network to access and store files on it. It may also allow remote access from the internet.

It could be a appliance that was built for that express purpose, or it could also be a ordinary PC set up with shared folders on the network.

Most people would buy a NAS box as they are generally designed to operate 24/7 constantly and have far lower power consumption than a normal desktop PC.

As to which and what NAS you should buy, you should probably check Whirlpool and get some suggestions from the NAS community. I don't dabble in NAS so I can't provide you a buyers guide.

    • Not keen to upload it online as it contains patient details

  • Maybe something like Drobo would work? http://www.drobo.com/
