If you're not far away from Flemington, try the Sydney Flower Market. You'll need to get up early though :)

Definitely rate the flower markets. Was there last week, they had a huge assortion of roses on sale (all except for red were reasonably priced).

As moocher said, try to get there early. I was there at 9am on Saturday and about half the stalls had shut for the day.

  • Thank you, I'll definitely go there.

    • Yeah like Eivad confirms, they do close early, because as flower wholesalers, they start at something crazy like 3am. When I have arrived at 8am on Saturdays in the past, they are already starting to pack up and sell off the remaining flowers. If you want hundreds, I would suggest trying to get there before 8am.

  • How are the prices for roses there? I'm thinking of getting up early tomorrow to buy some too.

Thanks in advance for any feedback,.

I'm really not sure for V.day and if there will be a big markup (esp for red roses) due to the demand.

In general, roses are in season in summer so there will be lots at the flower market. Prices vary from stall to stall and quality/freshness - I've seen them as low as a bunch of 10 for $2 but those are at the end of their vase life and will probably only last a day or two. Anything above $5-6/bunch look fresh and great. The prices start dropping further after 8am on Saturday as they are closing up.

If any of you guys end up going, would you mind posting what your findings are please, for future reference? Thanks.

BTW, if you're going tomorrow (V day) and don't want to pay $8 parking please see comment in other thread

      • You're a champion Moots. Much appreciated!

Edit: Will post prices tomorrow if I can get up early enough.

  • Got back earlier.

Prices range are $5 for half a dozen / short stem roses or $20 for half a dozen/ long stem roses (which also look slightly prettier) or $30-40 dollars for a dozen. Other flowers are about $5 a bunch.

The dressed up roses (with boxes and that) are around $50+, Some opportunistic entrepreneurs also tried selling them for $80 (good luck with that!)

Oh and parking is now $10 (gone up from $8).

    • Thanks for letting us know - looks like roses are pretty expensive, esp the long stem ones. Were non-red roses any cheaper?
Bummer about the parking too. :(

I wonder what prices will be like tomorrow for the surplus roses that didn't sell today.

At these prices it's worth investing in a few hybrid tea rose bushes if you have a few sunny spots in the garden! Buy them bare-rooted in winter for about $10, then just cut them fresh and present it to your loved one on special occasions :P

I picked up white roses for $5 for 8, and the pink ones were around %5-8 per half a dozen depending on which vendor you went to. A lot of people there this morning and the parking was horrendous. I couldn't even find a spot even though I paid $10 to get in. I had to eventually park around a dodgy corner and hope that it won't be towed away by the time I got back, lol.

Oh and one more pro tip, don't wear any nice or slippery shoes. The ground is very slippery and muddy.
