Where are all the laptop deals?

There was heaps of laptops last year especially i3 and i5's for $399 etc, I have been keeping an eye open and there hasn't been anything for a month or so at least, where are they all?

Mostly due to shrinking demand with laptops, as we are now in the touchscreen era (at least for mobile devices). Also, nobody really wants a low cost laptop 14-15" as they're heavy, have poor battery life, and only really suitable as a desktop replacement. For the average Joe, a tablet fulfills their needs and for those looking for an Office pc would probably buy a cheap Surface RT / ASUS T100.

Low-cost laptops barely make any money, so manufacturers like Apple, ASUS, Samsung and even Lenovo have now switched to producing tablets and hybrid tablets, since they're far cheaper to produce than laptops, and sell for $400~800 per unit. Apple has not made any major innovations with their Macbook line because they're pretty happy to sell iPads for a ridiculous profit margin.

Ugh that's terrible news, tablets are ok for reddit/Facebook, but if I really want to do some internet research or coding, or work I need a laptop, and I don't want an expensive one, an i3/i5 does me fine. I like 1366x768 screens because I can see the screen.

Does that mean there really won't be any low cost laptops anymore?

    • There will be still be laptops but the low end market is pretty much dominated by these low cost tablets. So unfortunately there will be no more of the cheap $400 Core i3 or i5 laptops like we used to see in 2012.

Perhaps look at a Lenovo Edge or X131E

      • The low end laptop market is also being eroded by Chromebooks, which are apparently increasingly popular in the education market in the US. The manufacturer avoids the Microsoft operating system tax and so gets to keep more of the slim margins available at this end of the market. Between these machines and low cost Windows tablets, cheap laptops seem to be a dying breed.

  • used to be a dell supporter, before they took off the customization on their web system : (

am looking for a decently spec-ed cheap laptop also

would suggest keeping an eye out @ www.msy.com.au/Parts/notebook.pdf

i see the acer's sometime has price drops and rebates with decent spec
but its an acer, and their low to mid range is not very reliable IMHO

  • just bought a dell for $1300. It is an ultrabook but with a touchscreen (a very good one too!). You can get a good deal on dells every once in a while, and check in their outlet store as well. You usually find good laptop deals around June when the sales start.

    • XPS 12/13? looking out on those as well

      • Nah mine was the inspiron 15 7000 series, looks like a macbook air from the outside.

  • my general feeling about laptops is there is no real substitute for them. I would tend to buy one packing less heat if possible since heat is often the biggest killer. I wouldn't be too keen on the faster hotter CPUs unless they were demanded in my work.
