Travel Expos - Can you really find a good deal there?

Girlfriend and I have a wedding to attend in Chicago late October, and we have been trawling the pass 3 months to find a good price for flights there and accommodation Chicago and NY city with very little luck at the moment..
A Travel expo will be on this weekend and I am wondering has anyone got any good deals at such an event? or just a barrel for travel agents to use pressure tactics (must book today to get price) for the masses? We have a large group of people(15+ ppl) going for the wedding, if there is a group discount what would be a good % amount to expect?

On the topic, anyone can suggest good cheap accommodation in NY City pleas share! The place atm looks like a rip off!

Thanks!

  • I never felt pressured at these expos. I'm usually more interested in the booths advertising countries or regions where I can pick up brochures to peruse. Most of the other booths are tours and experiences. I don't recall many transport and accommodation booths, though some for bus companies and hostel chains. You might get some expo offers but I think not in the categories you are interested in. TL;DR: good place to get background information and get enthused but the Internet is where you go for pricing.

    • Thanks for the information, might use the expo to get an idea of other things to do in Chicago.

  • I went to the Travel Expo at Melbourne last weekend. The price they quote can go from ridiculous to reasonable. From the same company (Flight Centre), I got quotes from $1500 to $2500 for a multidestination Asia trip. The price I could get online at home was $1500. So it wasn't a better deal.

My friend went with me on the same day and ended up buying tickets that were $100 cheaper than what was available online for return flights to Seoul.

However, there really were some good deals to locations that I weren't looking for, and a limited number of seats for those.

I think it's worthwhile going because you might actually find something. Go early because they said there were limited seats for some deals and because when I got there 2hrs after it opened, their computer systems were overloaded by all the people accessing it, so it took 20mins to get just one quote. If you go, you should hold onto all those prices you already found so you can compare. If you end up buying, just fyi, there is a credit card surcharge of 1-2%.

    • Thanks! I expected this could be the case, I'll be going with a group might book at the threat of missing out… I'm glad to hear your friend got something out of it. Will try and get there early.
