House Paint

House paint seems to more and more expensive, and at $60-70 for a 4L tin, it feels like we are bending over.
Besides the hardware stores, are there any places that sell paint cheaper?

Masters sell their house brand Pascol in bonus/bulk sizes. You can get 6 litres for the price of 4 for $59. e.g. https://www.masters.com.au/product/100654124/pascol-sunscree…

  • Thanks for the replies!
Can't wait for the sales, so will try Masters.

  • mistints.! how about mistints, most paint/hardware stores sell mistints at a lower price.

    • i did my kids rooms in mistints. half the price

  • Bunnings is advertising 6 litres (I don't recall the brand, but it's a decent one) for around $62.

If you're after a good price on mistints, try the little paint stores rather than Bunnings. One store here sells them for $5 per litre. We did all the trims on our house with mistints. I absolutely love the colour. The sad thing is that when it comes time to do touch-ups I'm not going to be able to match it.

    • Yes you will. If you have a little bit of paint left over now, just paint a card or a scrap of wood in the same colour. You can take it in to the paint shop when you need to get more and they can match the colour. They use a camera and a computer to analyze the colour and work out the formula of tints to make the same colour for you. Additionally, sometimes the can will have a label showing the name of the colour and the formulation. If you don't have any of these, carefully scrape a sample off the existing work about the size of a 20c coin or bigger and use that. You may want to consider that paint colour fades or changes over time, so if you just want to match the colour just for touchups, you are best to use the scrape method, or leave your sample exposed to the sun and rain so it weathers the same as the house.

      • Yes you will.

Not necessarily. We tried to get a wall colour matched 3 times, and NONE of them ended up being anything like the original colour. The ony similarity was that they were all yellow.

        • You must have had bad luck. I have never had a colour match not turn out as expected, and I have had them done at lots of different places. For best results the base needs to be the same as the original, e.g. satin, oil-based gloss etc., and preferably the same brand as the original. I guess it comes down to the skill of the operator as well, although I have had great results from young "burger flippers" as well.

  • I bought from Velvet Paint, Oakleigh. They sell all popular brands. My research said it was the cheapest.
    Ozbargainers may have better info?
