Advice on ATMs & exchanging cash in Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia

I'm traveling to Singapore for 2 days from Japan. Then off to Thailand and returning via Malaysia (One day in KL).

I have an ING card that I've been using to withdraw cash in Japan. I have about 140000 yen left. Should I exchange cash in Singapore or will I be better off saving my yen for Bangkok and just using an ATM in Singapore? I'm only in Singapore for 2 days and am saving all my shopping for Bangkok, so I wont need much cash hopefully.

If I withdraw cash in Singapore what ATMs should I use? Same with Bangkok and Malaysia..

Also where do you guys recommend I exchange cash?

Thanks for the advice.. first time I visit those places!

  • Easy - Citibank Plus.

nevermind - didn't even read your post properly LOL

I think you lose a bit more when you transfer money directly - it's probably better for you to withdraw your yen at a Singaporean ATM.

  • For exchanging money in Malaysia, I find the money changers at Mid Valley Mega Mall are very competitive, so if you plan on doing any shopping in KL, head there and get some money changed at the same time,

In Singapore I usually exchange money at Lucky Plaza.

  • Thailand - Kasikorn bank is reputable and offers decent over the counter rates. It's got a green colour scheme (signage, uniforms etc). I withdrew from their ATMs no issues not expensive.

Singapore - any of the money changers (not the big banks or your hotel) Chinatown is packed full of them. Still shop around and get a couple quotes.

  • Hey guys, so in thailand/there i can withdraw at an ATM with my commbank card and just pay a couple $ fee? Guessing the rate wouldnt be as competitive either as a money change place.

    • from memory there's always an ATM fee regardless, around $6.50 i think
