  • So other than wifi, what makes these scales worth so much?

Aria™ tracks your weight, body fat percentage, and BMI, painting a picture of your long-term progress. It wirelessly syncs your stats with online graph and mobile tools. https://www.fitbit.com/au/aria

    • The Wifi is actually pretty awesome. You step on it, and it handles everything else. It automatically shoots the results to your fitbit account, and from there you can pipe it to runkeeper/fitocracy/trendweight/etc.

      I like em.

That said, bioimpedence fat % is rubbish, so don't expect these to be any different if that's what you are after.

(also, I got mine from Rebel Sport for this, so not sure it's really a bargain)

It also identifies and tracks up to 8 separate users, so individual progress is not mixed up. It even tracks my cat as a separate user, because he likes sitting on the thing. Not sure if he is getting a slight tingle on the bum from the body fat test :)

Whats next? a smart toilet …??

      Ever been to Japan?

      • i need my bidet washer

      • +2

Exactly what I was about to say.
Lol, once you been to japan, you'd think that anywhere around the world is so low tech and backwards.

        A few cool items:
Ever used a giant capacitive screen (40-50" LCD) as a vending machine?
Web-enabled rice cooker… you can check how far along your rice is cooked.

Carparks which you simply drive your car into a room, and leave the car and it will park itself.
Bike Parks same as above with car parks.

Good thing with stuff in Japan, is they make things useable and have a keen eye for detail.
Not to mention the exceptional culture there, where you are practically treated as if you are family.

Security = Nobody steals stuff there, you can go there without your mind always thinking "oh crap is my wallet still in my pocket".

Public Toilets in Japan = Clean as if its your home toilet. You go in one and think "WTF is there a person cleaning this shit 24/7".

Japan…. It's addictive. You go there once, and you will be planning your next trip back there!

        • I remember in the snows, i went to the toilet of a restaurant and it was warm, it was weird feeling. I didnt like it. lol

        • Haha it was pretty cool, when i found a bidet which plays nature music like water falls and stuff.

It also automatically released perfumes depending on your settings.

Haha good for people who are embarrassed by the noise.

      • I'm real!

    • What if the toilet analysed what came out of you to check if your diet is lacking?

Or how about checking for certain communicable diseases and then collating this info with other connected smart toilets to check for outbreaks?

Note the specs - "Wireless 802.11b".

Because this could impact on my network performance (http://compnetworking.about.com/od/wirelessfaqs/f/mixing8021…) I'd consider the http://www.harveynorman.com.au/withings-ws-30-wireless-scale… @$129 (same price on the apple store with free shipping) supports b/g/n - http://www.withings.com/en/wirelessscale/specs)

If money no object, then I'd consider http://www.harveynorman.com.au/withings-smart-body-analyzer-… - it also measures CO2 levels. I kid you not. ;-)

    • I've read a few reviews and generally the Withings have come up on top from a build quality perspective, at least in the reviews I've come across. Some people may want the fitbit application however.

      • +4

You can sync your Withings weigh-ins with Fitbit.

    • Yes, the first time I setup my Aria I had no idea that it supports 802.11b ONLY. Once I figured that out, it was a no-brainer to set it up on my network. FWIW, I've never seen any tangible performance penalties on my 802.11n (and AC) network. I've never been bothered to try a speed test while the Aria was actively sending data (which only happens for less than a minute after you weigh yourself).

      • Yes - agree it shouldn't be a major issue. It does support WPA/WPA2, and it would only possibly cause an impact when it was sending data - which would not be for long as of course otherwise the batteries would die really quickly. Personally I just find it odd…. maybe it's a power saving thing.

    • Oh. Should note the WS-30 doesn't measure %fat - need to get the ws-50 to do that if it's important to you…

  • This seems pricy when bluetooth/wifi scales are generally about 66% of this price.

    • The key advantage I'd say is that the bluetooth devices will only give you the info if you have your 'phone nearby. The wifi ones will upload the data automatically and directly….

    • You're basically paying a once of fee for them to store and process your data for you..

It's almost like we have so much tech these days it distracts us from addressing the cause, instead we spend time measuring the symptoms. BMI is not even close to accurate if you lift or have a physical job and put on some muscle.

If you are eating correctly e.g. meat + vegies + fruit + drinking water it doesn't really matter what you weigh, you'll be healthy and ahead of 80% of the population.

Just trying to save you some money :) <Rant over>

    • +2

Agreed. Would never step on one of these to get an instant reading of exactly how fat or thin or healthy I am. Things like BMI have been shown on many occasions to not really show any of that. You can be really healthy but have a high BMI or vice versa. Where they are useful is in measuring changes to you over time - so in other words, pay no attention to what your BMI is, but rather how your weight is increasing or decreasing. That's where one of these things shines - it forms part of your daily routine as you simply step on the thing each morning and forget about it. Later down the track you can get online and see how that change in diet or exercise is impacting you.

      • I see the concept, but in this world of 'I want it now, lemon detox loose 10kg in 2 week diets' it's easy to fooled into the trap of 'I'm not loosing enough weight quickly enough'.

Weight is one of those things that is open to everyday fluctuations, you could have eaten a bit more salt yesterday and are carrying more water, the next day was quite hot and you lost some weight through perspiration. Some people freak after seeing they've only lost a bit of weight but have been working hard and give up because person xx on TV lost xx weight within 2 weeks!

Also by the fact that something is being measured it usually means it is the focus.

Instead focusing on food and how good food makes you feel good means you are aware of what you are eating. Tracking things like mood, sleep, energy and how your clothes fit should be priortised above weight, because these are real life indicators of a healthy person.

      • Yep. I don't think the BMI aspect of these interest me at all. If I had a weight goal however having a visual representation of my progress would be handy and convinient. Sure, you can use a pen and paper to do it but for some this may be a nice motivator.

The data can then integrate with other fitness applications too if you're into that kind of thing.

    • a) These don't measure BMI, so that's a weird rant
      b) Of course it matters what you weigh. Just because you ate a steak and an apple doesn't automagically make you healthy

      • a) Did you read the product description?
        b) Agreed, you missed out the vegies and water ;)

        • +1

I own them, so yes. They measure weight and fat %. The BMI is just a backsolved chart on the website.

        • -1

Lol, you don't measure BMI, you calculate it.
And thats what it does on the website…

I'd be suprised if you managed to create a device which "measures" BMI.

        • :)

My fault for wording that incorrectly. I meant to say we spend time measuring symptoms like weight gain / loss and the BMI measurement itself is not that accurate.

Apple bringing out a version soon, will be called the "iFat".

    • I think it will spelled "iPhat"

I have an Aria box sitting at my desk since October last year for $149.95 retail from Harvey Norman. Odd that they went up to 167…

  • Fitbit addict here.

Sorry it's always been at this price at DSE, I saw a couple on ebay for $120 in the past, but as it was said above the withings for $129 can sync with fitbit iphone app so it's worth it in comparison.

I got mine for $85. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/88616 Surprised at how much they have gone up. I actually have two and they are great. Only about 1kg difference in the readings between the units, but one is on wood and one on tiles so different hardness in surfaces may account for the discrepancy, which is only about 0.8%. One unit played up and was not initializing properly within a couple of weeks of purchase. A quick email to Fitbit and they sent me out a replacement unit from USA within a couple of days. Great service.

If you buy one of these every week then you wont have any money left over to buy food.
    Weekly weight crash …

I got one of these for my wife or Christmas, lol. Anyway, it's great. Had to laugh when it emailed me the other day asking me to change its batteries.

"Get off the scales, smokenmirraz, you're using up all the bandwidth!"

Gee whiz love the price gouging!

    I listed this back in Dec '12 - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/88616

They were $100 then and got an additional $10 off making them $90.

I definitely rate them but for $148, a $58 increase from 14 months ago I would pass!

    • Don't forget the additional $5 off with WELCOME5 code.

Thats when I got mine for $85 .. steadily tracked my weight gain ever since.
