Cheapest way to travel from Tullamarine airport to Bourke St (Melbourne)

For 2 people from Tullamarine airport to a hotel in Bourke St(Melbourne)

I was told taxi would cost around $55 each way = $110 return

Best deal I could find is the Skybus 2x$30 = $60 return for 2ppl

Are there any alternatives? Train?

  • Skybus by far is the most convenient.

There's no train at Melbourne Airport, and while you could take a bus to a small suburb and catch the train, it saves only a few (like $5-$10) and would take a LOT longer and a lot of hassle. I live in Melbourne but travel between Melbourne and Sydney regularly and always Skybus it.

Get a train to Broadmeadows station and then a bus-

Home To & from the airport
    Public Buses

The following public bus services arrive and depart from Melbourne Airport:

    • SmartBus Route 901 Melbourne Airport to Frankston – connects to Craigieburn line at Broadmeadows Station
    • Route 478 Moonee Ponds to Melbourne Airport – connects to the Craigieburn line at Essendon Station
    • Route 479 Sunbury to Moonee Ponds – connects to Sunbury line trains at Sunbury Station
    • Route 500 Broadmeadows to Sunbury - connects to Sunbury line trains at Sunbury Station

Take the bus (SmartBus 901) between the Airport and Broadmeadows Station and then the train between Broadmeadows Station and Melbourne Central Station.

Total time is usually a bit over 1 hour and cost is $6.06 ($24.24 return for 2 people - saving you $35.76 compared to the SkyBus)

Unfortunately, if you don't have a myki (public transport ticket) you need to buy one for $6 (brings cost up to $36.24 return for 2 people). But you'll need to pay that anyway if you want to use public transport while in Melbourne.

  • Yacht - walk? - now that is CHEAP

  • Thanks, altomic & devilbabies will consider bus.

Can someone please help explain the Myki fare, on the website, it says there is a daily maximum fare.

*myki charges you a fare when you touch off. If you do not touch off at the end of your trip, the myki system does not have all the information it needs to calculate your fare and it will therefore charge a 2 hour default fare. This ensures you pay for each trip.

A default fare is not a penalty and in many cases is the fare you would have paid if you did touch off. Touching off tells myki where you ended your trip and ensures you pay the lowest fare. If you don’t touch off, your myki doesn’t know where you got off and will charge a default fare.*

Train Full fare 2 hour Zone 1 and 2 $6.06
Tram Full fare 2 hour Zone 1 $3.58
Bus Full fare 2 hour myki money fare between where a customer boards and the zone at the end of the service. All zones between and including the zone where the customer touches on and the zone at the end of the service.

Does it mean that a tram and bus trip for the whole day will be capped at $6.06?

    • As long as you are able to complete the journey within the 2 hours it will cost $6.06 otherwise it will cost 12.12.

Best bet would be to get a Myki cards with myki money and load ot up with $25. The you can use it fro the return journey.
Would hate for you to get a fine for not having enough money on your miki.
