Samsonite S'cure 75cm Red Suitcase "De Luxe" - €139.90 (AU $213) Delivered (eBay Italy)

220

Cheapest price in Australia (non-DeLuxe): $329. Australian RRP (non-DeLuxe): $549.

I was in the market for a large suitcase, and thought I'd share the outcome. I would not lightly post a product from an overseas eBay seller, but this seller has been around for 9 years and has 99.98% positive feedback for the past year. The price is significantly cheaper than what we pay here, and delivery to WA is expected to take 10/12 days (for me that is as long as an eParcel from Eastern States). Mine has been posted with tracking.

This DLX (DeLuxe) version apparently has nicer finishings with Chrome, a laundry bag and a wet bag. Not sure what else is different, but it costs about 10% more than the non-DLX on amazon UK and 15% more on Samsonite UK. In Oz, we have to pay at least $329 for the cheaper "normal" version, so I figured $213 is a great price (This is what my creditcard charged me - I paid in Euro's and do not pay currency conversion fees )

Details on the product: http://www.samsonite.co.uk/s-cure-dlx/collection-en.htm

This seller has the non-DLX in other colours, but they cost more (charged in AUD's).

  • Bagworld and Luggage Gear are both $329 (excl shipping). Good Deal over $100 off.

  • Thanks, been looking around for some luggage for an overseas trip and this may do the job. The colour isn't that appealing but the price makes up for it.

    • +3

It's easier to spot on the luggage belt, and less likely to be confused with someone else's suitcase (by accident or on purpose). That's worth something. At least it's not bright-red but a darker (more classy) red.

wow that shipping is so cheap for such a large item

  • Is 4.8kg heavy for this size case?

    • Don't believe so. On samsonite's website it says it's their lightest ever polypropylene collection.

EDIT: Actually other ranges seem to be much lighter. This is 2.8kg for example:

It's light for its size, but there are lighter ones. Their Cosmolite ones are quite amazing, but I am not prepared to pay that much. I also find the material a bit too skinny. Given that they are both polypropylene, the only way the Cosmolite can be lighter is by being thinner. Personally I want a certain level of robustness. Keep in mind that luggage allowances on major airlines are going up. Singapore Airlines and Qantas often give you 30kg nowadays (international).
Incidentally, I'm not sure why the DLX version is 4.8kg, whereas the normal one is 4.6kg.

Must be the chrome trim :)

  • ebay? are you sure it's not Samsongite? :D

    • I considered it, but an eBayer with such a glowing record is not about to tarnish it by selling fake goods.
These suitcases (and many others) are made in Belgium, and are cheaper in Europe as a result.
I remember when Samsonite suitcases were less than AU $90 in Europe, while being around AU $300 in Australia. This was pre-2000.

  • Is this a limited time sale? Can't access from here unfortunately to view myself.

    • +1

I don't think so. I ordered mine two days ago. It says more than 10 in stock. Then again, it's on Ozbargain now, so who knows :)

  • I cringe when I see pretty bags being checked in.

    • I cringe when I see them come back…
Imagine the people who spend $700+ on the top-of-the-range ones.

Airlines do not cover damage to wheels or handles (as I found out recently), so unfortunately you need to buy quality luggage nowadays if you want it to stay in one piece (without spending so much that you can't risk damage).

      • Haha.. yeah, I've got a really beaten up American Tourister (Samsonite made) hard case that has been sticker bombed by various airport security, and had the snot kicked out of it by disgruntled baggage handlers.

        https://www.bagworld.com.au/shop/detail/american-tourister-f…

Like that, but I paid $140.

Since when did they stop covering handles and wheels? My old beast has had multiple repairs.

        • I bought a Swiss Alps suitcase set from DealsDirect when they had specials about half a year ago. Supposedly Wenger, but only under license. Poorly made, and after two trips a corner cracked such that the wheel wouldn't move anymore. Clearly the suitcase was not strong. Went to the airline desk, and they showed me the airline policies. Wheels, straps, handles, etc. are not covered. This was a couple of months ago.
Warranty service of Swiss Alps was worthless. Got dealsdirect to sort it out, who also needed 4 weeks to get through to the supplier. Thankfully got full refund in the end.

Those American Tourister ones are good. Nearly got one (they're ~$180 now), but figured this Samsonite was better value.

Just went and checked them out at DJ's.

Nice and light for it's size, and the closing mechanism looks much better than a zip. It isn't lined and had no pockets in the divider, but this wasn't the deluxe version.

Definitely a nice suitcase for the price. Seems very sturdy when closed.

  • Just curious how did you find it!

I'm an Ozbargainer. 'Nuf said :)

I usually check out eBay prices for anything I buy. Ensure you search globally, sort by price+postage. When you find a good deal, also check other deals by the same seller.
You would be amazed how many reputable sellers there are, and how cheap things can be overseas. Shipping from some countries (e.g. UK) can be very cheap.

Made in Belgium not China like some Samsonite bags - Video here - http://www.mychoice.co.uk/samsonite-s-cure-dlx-suitcase-4-wh…

Only a 5 year warranty but some sites say a 10 year warranty?

Total size of 158cm is the limit for most international airlines but over the limit for some domestic airlines. Not sure if they measure or not?

  • I got the regular secure from Victoria station at dfo. Can't remember how much I paid but probably around $330. Definitely a good deal on this one. Also bought a Samsonite colory at the same time. The secure is a better case I think as it is zipless and somewhat water resistant as it has a rubber seal instead of a zip.

  • Purchased via paypal for a total of $222.05 AUD.

Went to Myer to check them out and they're really well put together and quite light for their size, Myer sell them for $549 but they have 35% off at the moment.

I checked out the lighter Samsonite and whilst I'm sure they are strong they aren't very rigid and all have zips for that reason. For the money I don't believe this deal can be beaten.

Thanks to 'Make it so' for posting this deal, I'm now $222.05 lighter but I have a suitcase that I will hopefully use in around 6 months time!

No worries, thanks for the feedback.
Just for info: in Paypal you can configure your creditcard such that Paypal does not do currency conversion for you. Paypal's rates are really bad. To avoid currency conversion fees of your creditcard/bank card, use one of the cards I put above in the description. The conversion rates of a creditcard are normally very good.

      • Thanks for that. Just purchased, and was wondering how to get it at $213. Luckily I saw your post and figured out how to change the currency.

        Thanks for a great post!

      • Thanks, I have a large balance in PayPal so I didn't mind taking the $9 hit.

6 OzBargain'd so far today, only 71 left.

        Quantity left: 71 available
Time left: 5 days, 2 hours 53 minutes 20 seconds

  • Just bought it after looking for weeks for a good suitcase at a good price thank you! I was just wandering for future reference how do you configure your credit card on paypal so they don't do the currency conversion?
    I just paid the $222.05

    • I just stole some instructions from another website, because I couldn't remember. It's not straightforward.

My Account -> Profile -> My Money -> My preapproved payments -> Update -> See Available Funding Sources (or Set Available Funding Sources) -> Conversion Options (for card you'd like to change this option)-> Bill me in the currency listed on the seller's invoice -> Submit

Do check on currency conversion fees from your creditcard first. But as I mentioned, there are plenty of options for fee-free cards.

      • Thank you for this! Updated my Paypal! This whole time I could of saved a dollar or two!

  • For those who want to choose other colours (e.g black) check out ebay.com.au with the same seller. I got black one in the same size for $224.73. They also have 65cm ones from 187.0.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l131…

    • Note that the black one is not a DLX (DeLuxe) model though. It does not have some of the extra's, like the laundry bag and wet bag, or the "fancy finishings".

      • Yeah, I just noticed the differences. Thank you anyway.

  • Just got my shipping notification this morning - est 10/12 days for Melbourne.

I don't understand how a 5kg suitcase can be transported across the world so quickly for $15 euro. Not complaining though.

  • I just got the suitcase ok, changed the lock code from 000 to xxx closed the lock and now the suitcase wont open on xxx or 000.

cant find any useful info online.

    anyone got any suggestions ?

    • Should probably have tested the new code before closing the suitcase.
Maybe it was off by one digit. I'd try one digit in either direction for each digit, while keeping the other two the same.

My case arrived yesterday and I just picked it up, great buy for the price and a fantastic case. I don't want to get it marked now so maybe I'll put it in its cardboard box before I fly next :)

    • at which point the baggage handlers will smash the crap out of it ;)

      • Australia Post tried and failed!

  • Mine arrived yesterday and has been picked up by the wife today. I still can't get over the fact that they have delivered a 5kg suitcase across the world for 15 euro.
