Simple website building

Hi,

I'm building a website for a small boutique architect. The site needs to be relatively simple (but nicely designed).

It needs to act like a brocuher- showing some work and giving contact details.

I've designed it with WIX already, and I'm somewhat familiar with SEO.

Who's the best to go for with a ".com.au" domain? How much should I expect to pay?

I do have server at home. Any point in hosting it myself? Where is recommended?

I don't imagine lots of traffic, or high reliability are important (not expecting many hits- it's a highly specialized type of architecture).

Thanks,

  • for small use, check out zuver and netvirtue (as examples, but I have used them).
this will give you a guide for hosting costs vs bandwidth, etc
I suggest that even the $2/month plans would be better than your home server

    add about $10/yr for a .com.au

search the previous posts on ozb for hosting deals and see which providers get upvoted.

  • you can buy domain names from anyone - the price varies - but i wouldnt pay more than $30 for 2 years on a .com.au domain.

do a google search "australian domain names" and start looking at the various offers.

Just keep in mind that WIX (not wanting to bag their service out) don't tailor all their templates to mobile and tablet users well - so if you expect your audience will want to view your site on these types of devices.. better do a few tests before you launch the site officially, and if any flash or layout issues exist - choose a different template - or another service.

    Good luck

  • +1

I use VentraIP for my .au domains, $20 for 2 years, aussie company - never had a problem.

As far as hosting, if you intend to set this client up with email @ the doamin name, I wouldn't cheap out on hosting too mcuh, I had some of my sites hosted on a cheap host and the server I was on got used for span, long story short the server got blacklisted and I had huge problems with emails from my domain going to peoples junk boxes. I moved to inmotion hosting, never had a problem, a bit more expensive but you can host a few sites on the same account, so can make it better value. good luck!

    • I wouldn't cheap out on hosting too much

Good advice there, although how much to spend really depends on how important the website is. Expensive hosting doesn't always mean quality, although cheap hostings often are nasty.

      • I don't see the website as being hugely important though, some downtime wouldn't affect the business at all.

So I think cheap is the way to go. Who's best?

Also, for domain name CrazyDomains.com.au is much cheaper than ventra ($9.95 vs $24.95)

        • CrazyDomains quoted $9.95 — that's for 1 year, but with .AU domains it has always been 2 year terms. Also note that CrazyDomains is actually not Australian. Owned by "DreamScape Networks FZ-LLC" they are not registered for GST, which means their business customers cannot claim the GST back in BAS.

Not to mention all the problems associated with CrazyDomains. Lots of reviews there at Whirlpool.

    • How do you get the AU domains for $20?

Just had a look at the site & it says $24.95
      https://ventraip.com.au/domain-names/

      • They must have recently put up their price. I posted a VentraIP domain deal last December where you get $2 off to $17.95 — so it was $19.95/2 years just 2 months ago.

  • Can I use Amazon's AWS Free Tier machine to host my site? So all I need to pay for is a domain?
