  • How's the W1080ST compare to the W1070?

  • +2

Check the specs, user review, and an offical review on projector central:

    http://www.projectorcentral.com/BenQ-W1080ST.htm

IIRC this projector is basically as good as the W1070 (very highly rated for the price) but really only good for short throw setups (that may be good or bad, depending on the room you want to put it in and distance from screen etc). Use the calculator on the link above to work out what screen size you can expect etc.

Cheapest on static ice is about $1050. Not sure I'd go with scoopon for warranty, etc…

    • Yeah, sorry, I normally do put in specs but I was at work and had to be quick! Thanks for doing it Trishool.

I have this projector, purchased from evatech for $1099. Its fantastic, I dont believe you could get a better projector for the price. Cant comment on 3d quality, havent watched anything in 3d.

Even low quality 480p rips look great

    • What size screen do you project on to? I was looking at this earlier but I was concerned that although it can project an image size of 300" the picture quality would be severely diminished, realistically I could only do about 200" but just wondering how it would fare.

      • 200" screen?! How big is ur room!? If I were to get a screen that big then I would definitely be looking at a better projector and perhaps even the Sony 4k.

        • +1

Yeah but a 4k projector costs a lot of money, this is cheap cheap.

        • +2

I would suggest max screen size to be 130" for the PJ. Most HT enthuisiasts go only up to the 150" range and this is with PJs well up to 10x the price.

      • Are you sure you mean 300 inches (not centimetres) diagonal (not width)?

Either way, use the projection size calculator on the projector central link above to get an idea what it can do at various sizes. For really big sizes, the brightness is what suffers, so you can go pretty big in a dark room.

But most people stay under 150" or so, mine's only 90" and it's pretty big.

        • In short, yes inches not cm I do understand the difference.
The room is 6m by 6m but gets some indirect sunlight add that to the projector does 1080p, if it were a higher end 4k projector I may be happier attempting 300" but I don't think it would be worthwhile with this one. Still questioning the purchase given that it will cost a fair bit more for a motorised screen.

        • +1

          A 300" screen on a 6m wall? Almost possible with a 4.5m ceiling and 4:3 :)

        • Yeah, haven't looked that far in to it. 200" would be a stretch, I think 190" would be closer with 200" screen. Also it's got to be 16:9.

I may have to think about a dedicated theatre room with high ceilings for my dream home.

Yeah I bought this PJ + glasses earlyish sat year from evatech. One of the best tech purchases I've made. I shoot a 120" screen from around 2mt, it's plenty bright enough to use mid afternoon with the sun coming in indirectly through the window. Fantastic PJ. The 3d is great, if you care about it.

PS3 and PC have been my primary sources for it, but Apple TV (netflix and Hulu) are thrown up there often too.

Well worth it if you have the area for one.

  • The replacement for the w1070 has just been released the w1300 - but cheapest price is around $1300. The w1080 for the price is pretty good

    globes replacement cost

    • Never replaced a globe. They last so long these days that, by the time you need it, you'll end up getting a new 4K projector for a few hundred bucks more.

If your TV lasts as long as your projector globe, you're doing pretty well, honestly.

  • How does PQ compare to led/plasma screens? Also how often do you replace the light globes?

    • from link above
      not sure on cost though
      Light Source: Type:

      Eco-Mode Life: 6000 hours

There are so many variables between the PQ of an fixed screen (LCD/Plasma) and a PJ to make the comparison almost worthless. The same PJ will look totally different depending on the screen and the material it is shooting to (its colour and gain, if any), the borders of that screen (if any), the control of the light in the room (ambient light) it is being used and so on. And that doesn't even consider whether the particular viewer can see the rainbow effect of this PJ (it is noticeable, but I don't find it distracting 99% of the time and my partner has never noticed it).

With that said, this is an entry level 1080p PJ, very capable of shooting a massive screen from a small distance. If you have the desire and ability to setup a huge screen, you won't - indeed can't - buy a better LCD/Plasma for a grand cashmoney. However, a grand does buy a very reasonable 55-65" glass screen these days that has an altogether different set of drawbacks and compromises relative to the PJ.

My w1080ST didn't replace my 50" plasma as the main screen for day-to-day use, but if I'm settling in for an afternoon of gaming or movie watching, you betcha ass 120" PJ > every advantage of the 50" plasma!

How does PQ compare to led/plasma screens?

You need a darkened room for projector, same as at the cinema.

      • Yes, although even the cheapest projectors these days give a decent quality image during the day in an ordinary room with the curtains closed.

    • LED/Plasma are brighter during the day and easier to set up.

Projectors are cheaper for equivalent-or-better image quality at screen sizes 60" or bigger.

I have a 90" display using a 720p projector I got for $430 that I prefer overall to my old $750 1080p 51" Samsung plasma, but I had to do some work to set up the room a bit.

  • I assume Catch of the day and scoopon are associated.

    COTD has the same deal

COTD has been quick to response on issues, although small amount purchases.

Just bought one from EVATECH… $1075

Included benq glasses are incredibly uncomfortable.. I feel sorry for anyone who actually purchased these glasses for their retail price

Picture is near enough to identical to the w1070.. 3D is really good.. but you MUST upgrade the firmware to the latest version (quite involved but absolutely necessary if you want to play SBS 3D movies from your computer)

The short throw also makes this projector pretty much suitable for any size room.

Also the best projector if you intend on gaming.. Very low input lag
