Watching .avi on Windows Surface RT

Try to open .avi movie file on a Windows Surface RT.

Error occurs.
Did some research online. Media player does not support .avi on RT.

Tried many if not all free video players app from store without luck.

Any tip to play .avi without the need to convert the file first with third party programme.

Thank you in advance.

VLC was meant to be becoming available in early 2014, but I haven't noticed it in the app store yet.

I just checked an .avi and it played perfectly using Xbox video in both a Surface RT AND a Surface 2 (ie. RT2).

As mentioned, avi doesn't mean much.

Probably depends on the codecs.. AVI is just a container

To help the OP (and ozAzn) 'avi' is just a container, for the video to play the video codec and audio codec must be supported. Typically divx/xvid are used in avi files, but it could be almost anything.

If you open the file in VLC it can give you more information.

  • "After testing, the RT tablet supports AVI video in DIVX, XVID, MPEG code well, but if AVI in MSMPEG codec, it doesn't. I tried to use the Xbox video player, PressPlay Video and mobile.HD Video Player to play MSMPEG AVI, but I failed." Same experience as this quotation above. Any possible solution? Thank you.

Buy a device that lets you to install programs? Sorry, I don't see any other way, it is either supported or it isn't.

I haven't kept up on this, but it may be possible to break the security on your device (like jailbraking an iOS device), but here be dragons.

The only solution I can see would be to convert the file into a compatible format before trying to play it on the Surface.

  • Thanks guys. The Surface plays most video. Given up to convert. may as well play video in laptop.
