Woolworths Mobile (Optus) finishing 23 March 2014

My wife just got a text saying any recharge after that date needs to be on the Optus prepaid plans.

Any thoughts on this?

I just bought six 45 day recharge vouchers at lunch which expire in 12 months and will be accepted.

  • I just had an online chat conversation with them. They said that I will keep the value and it is the name that is going to change from Woolworth to Optus. Although I am not 100% convinced because they could not provide me with a link to the "Optus" branded cap of what we are getting with Woolworth.
Another thing is 10% off when you buy with Everyday Reward card - it is no more. Although they said that if you recharge online you can be eligible for 10% off on top ups of $30 and $50.
I guess lets wait and see. I would not buy Woolworth recharges though as they might cut data allowance or 45 days expiry because there is no prove that they will keep the same value.

After the 12 month period from the new-signup cutoff late last year is up, you should expect changes/skullduggery.

  • I got this message too, I knew it wouldn't last forever but it doesnt give much information if the current plans will stay the same or not. My phone recently broke so might have to get a contract now if its not worth getting prepaid.

Or, you could just buy a phone outright - or unlock a non-Optus prepaid one if you need to - and use your current sim.

From the wording of your comment, I'm not sure that you realise that?

So will the prices/data allowances/costs be the same?

Thanks bud. You just saved me buying a years worth of vouchers. If the value remains the same then I won't need to churn at all. I don't use all of the 5gb or the call value. I do use a fair bit of data. Approx 2gb but this is still the best value plan with the data I need

    • thanks for posting that cooperdog - great to actually have some form of confirmation in writing.

  • Well thats good news! Thanks to whoever posted that. But it still is kindof wondering how long it will last so I will probably eventually either get a plan if there isnt another similar deal going round.
Going overseas the woolworths service isnt the best, as it doesnt work in many countries at all which is probably just an optus thing and I usually just use it for receiving emergency calls, and txts if your lost and things like that, The txts in Singapore cost about $4 if I remember rightly.

Looks like it's time to stock up on Woolworths vouchers but I guess you risk Optus lowering the 5gb data -
    Q. I've already purchased a Woolworth's prepaid voucher, can I still redeem it after 23/3/14?
    A. Yes, you can still redeem your voucher until the expiry date stated on your voucher.

  • They just sent me another text saying that it's exactly like the woolworths mobile plan. $250 to anyone, $250 to Optus, 5gb data, 45 days expiry. Though the only thing that has changed is that you have to either purchase the 30 or 50$ Optus recharge voucher and you can't get 10% discount anymore

    • As Luke73 mentioned, u can buy a few to stock up on the everyday rewards card, I will probably buy 1 or 2, not many more than that

  • Just got this sms -
Today's the day your prepaid service switches to the Optus brand. Optus $30/$50 recharge vouchers are now available. Pick one up in store, or if you recharge online you'll only pay $26 or $44. Info at optus.com.au/pp4u

  • Hmm, if we are part of the "Optus Family" now, does that mean we can use Optus 4G? They say we use the same network as before, which sounds like we cannot, but has anyone tried?

Tried my wife's phone and no go, still 3G (iPhone 5S)

    • Woolworths use 3G sim card, so…

      • …if we persuade Optus to change our card and keep our plan… ? :P

        • We have a 4g nano sim but it doesn't make a difference. It's controlled at the plan level.

  • So to sum it up:

    1. Woolworthmobile is no more, now it is a special fully Optus plan. (although we still use Woolworth branded sim cards)

    2. You can not get 10% off using your Woolworth reward card but if you login to your Optus account, you can then recharge at $26 or $44.

    3. If you buy top up in store you get extra 10% of value in extra credits to use within 30 days. (I am not sure how to use them up before standard money. It seems useless because we have 45 days to use standard money)
