Getting a cable modem from retailer

Hi guys and gals,

My Telstra supplied home gateway has stopped working and is no longer under the warranty period and I was wondering if anyone had experience buying a cable WiFi modem from a retailer?

It's $72+$12 delivery to get it from Telstra itself and I've previously had problems during the warranty period with no support/replacement and Telstra also stated I'll need to buy ANOTHER modem for NBN with no credit for that modem.

So my question is whether any of you have experience with cable modems and compatibility with Telstra cable and whether you could give me some advice on what models or where to get them?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the wall of text.

These come up regularly on gumtree and ebay and sell for peanuts. People take them when they move out of cable area (er…so did I, d'oh).

    • Would I need to have any checkpoints before purchasing one?
      Like any specifications etc?

      • look for the same model on ebay

like this oneon ebay for less than $20 (though an auction)

  • What model is it? I have a SB5100(I think that's the model number) which is around 2-3 years old from memory.

  • Just call Telstra and ask for a new one, they usually give you a free one or 'delivery fee only' for being a 'loyal customer'. Just call complaints if support won't give you one for free. They hand them out fairly easily because without one then you may no longer be a customer, and this is built into their margins. If you change a a new bundle/24 month contract it usually includes a new WiFi modem anyway.
