Asus Nexus 7 2012 32GB Wi-Fi - $199 @ JB Hi-Fi

50

Just spotted this on their website and in my inbox.

Asus Nexus 7 2012 32GB Wifi going for $199 with what appears to be decent stock levels.
I've only spotted cheaper prices for refurbished models.

I've got one myself and can say that it's pretty good on the train as an e-reader and for the occasional game.

Not commenting on the actual "deal" itself, but why bother getting this old low-res model?

It's like getting excited about a slight discount for last year's model of car which has a smaller motor, less gears, less space, less features, and it less desirable and has a lower resale value.

New model is vastly superior and only $270-280 (did get down to $250 I think). If the specs of this old model are sufficient then you're better off getting a Chinese clone for $120-150 max (which will probably have higher specs, better cameras and better screen anyway)

    • yeah i agree. This model is almost 2 years old now and that is pretty old for technology these days.

This model would be good for movies for kids in the car, but unfortunately, it runs dry on the batteries when in standby much quicker than the 2013 model.

bought one last year for $130 new.

  • To me this res is ok on 7" tab. At this price I'd still say get the newest model. The newer model is a lot snappier.

  • picked up the Nexus 7 2 32GB from OW with pricebeat of 10% in January for $228. The Good Guys were advertising it for $250, or thereabouts.
so this isn't really a deal in my mind for old tech that can also be bought cheaper elsewhere

For anyone reading the above comments, don't hold back on getting a 2012 model. This was absolutely the first 7" tablet that helped Android cut a niche in the market. Good performance, good screen, good battery life. I have absolutely no idea why someone would said the battery runs dry on standby - our 3 absolutely sip battery on standby. Agree that $199 isn't the best price, suggest you aim for reconditioned for $150.

This was absolutely the first 7" tablet that helped Android cut a niche in the market.

Yeessssss… and that was 2 years ago. Now days the specs have been overtaken by generic tablets.

2 years is a LONG time in this tech market.. this is a nice tablet in isolation, but if you want a Nexus 7 then you would be mad to buy this, and if your budget is $200 then you would be mad to buy this.

      • Not sure I can agree with that thinking. The 2013 model is still significantly more expensive at this low end. The Chinese can't give you the latest android firmware the nexus has and will continue to have, and the Nexus 7 hardware still makes the most of everything it has. On paper I would agree with you, but in practise I disagree that there is anything better at this price range. If there is, maybe you could post suggestions for the bargainers?
