NEXUS 7 Screen Replacement in Melbourne

Bought 2013 FHD Nexus 7
Tablet was in a official cover and dropped from bed to carpet, and Screen has cracked.
Cant believe how fragile it was.
Have dropped about every other phone or tablet ( Iphones, ipad, Samsung) from much higher distance - had no issue whatsoever.
Gorilla Glass my A$%^& - rubbish
Having seen online forums, I am not surprised !

Having seen, that there have been so many deals lately- so beware or be careful

Also if you someone can advise where to get it fixed or DIY, [screen replacement + digitizer]
Ebay seems to over $100 for the both, seems bit steep as paid only $280 for it late last year

  • Gorilla glass only helps with scratches.

You're looking to pay a hefty sum… reason being the digitizer is attached to the screen itself and disassembly is a major pain.

Some PC magazines/blogs and probably XDA have covered how to replace it yourself but I think getting Asus to replace it wouldn't be that much more costly.

    • thanks, I thought about Gorilla glass other way around
Yeah there are a few blogs
According to one user on whirlpool, ASUS is asking for $220 which is only $50 less than buying the new one

      • I'd help look for those guides but I'm on mobile atm. Sorry! ( The steps aren't that difficult if you have the tools except if I recall, the glue and holdings of the tablets parts inside make it difficult).

        • thanks !. so you replaced one too ?
If so how much did you end up paying ?

        • Never replaced mine..(thank heavens).

Check those online stores that sell parts, you'll basically be paying for the LCD+digitizer which will be at least $100+ (without shipping).

        • thanks, seems really expensive for relatively inexpensive tablet
Really hard to find a genuine one, if it is, it around ~180 mark

  • Actually it doesn't have Gorilla glass. Only corning scratch resistant glass.

    • yeah agreed[http://www.gsmarena.com/asus_google_nexus_7_cellular-5091.php]
but I remember in early days being advertised as a toughened glass
Maybe I am wrong or I was given a fake sales spiel

they saying more damage restitant and then they saying "Something Corning is able to provide due to a proprietary glass composition that is better able to resist the deep scratches that cause glass to break."

  • Happened to me :( deflected drop on floor tiles because i managed to get my foot under it. made no difference.

lots of google later and I discovered it isn't really worth replacing the glass (it's corning glass, pretty much as strong as window glass for impacts) as it was approaching the price of a new one.

FIX: The mrs bought me an ipad air and I have a smashed Nexus 7 at the back of my top draw that i'll probably chuck in a year or so.
