Round The World - Including South America, departing from Melbourne

Hi Fellow OzBargainer's,

Hoping you guys can help.

I'm planning to go to Europe in June this year, and then on to South America for a number of months, then returning to Melbourne, Australia.

What's the best way to arrange this itinerary? Is Round-the-world the way to go?

Any tips appreciated, as I have never been to South America.

  • Some say go out of New Zealand on various carriers, others get to ASIA then buy cheap ARW from there.
    Book direct with airline.

    • Thanks Foxtail,

      I will look into that…

  • I'm not a travel agent fan, but whenever I've wanted a round the world fare I've gone to Bestflights (now apparently Hello World). http://www.helloworld.com.au/flights/round-the-world/

  • Hopefully someone here has done exactly what youre proposing and can give good advice, but i would suggest a flight centre agent for this type of itinerary.

I have done Au -> Tokyo -> Paris (Frankfurt stopover), then Barcelona —> NY (frankfurt stopover), then LA -> AU on the one ticket. With luftansa . They were the cheapest at the time. There might be something better now. Not all agents know how to do this. Basically luftansa have 5 really cheap seats on each flight. They then have 10 more middle priced seats each flight. Then they have the dearer seats. To get the cheapest flight possible, the agent needs to secure the cheapest seat on every leg of the flight. If one leg is on a dearer tier, the whole flight goes on the dearer tier. Luftansa flies Europe to Asia and America. They then use star aliance partners for the flights in and out of Australia. Also, you cant backtrack on the Jouney, every country has to be in the same direction you're heading (from left to right or right to left). This may be an option if luftansa fly to south America from Frankfurt.

I hate flying into USA unnecessarily.

Aerolineas Argentina no longer fly direct to Australia from mid this year.

I recommend flying westwards. So through Asia first then America's. I don't get jet lag in this direction.

    Nothing stops( what i did)
    Book from A-B, B-C ,C-D, D-E and then E-A
Need to check whats more effective and what would do desperately need to see first in case the trip is cut short for any reason

    Leave sufficient times in between

Going to Europe is easy you can find a good deal easily
In Europe shouldn't be an issue finding transport, plenty of options

IMO flights are cheaper from London to Brazil or via CA( US) and potentially back that[US] way
