Fromy my experience Coles doesn't allow it.
Wollies does it
i got a 250 gift card and split it into some 100 dollar ones (to give to wife to use)coles didn't allow it, although if you used the self serve counter, get them to put a gift card through, wait for them to leave and pay by gift card, it'll prolly allow you
When I got the $50 Woolworths card for the Christmas promotion, I simply bought my usual groceries and included a $50 gift card to another store. That way I'm technically using my gift card for groceries and buying another gift card but in effect buying one gift card with another I got free from Woolworths.
If you read the conditions on a Coles Myer giftcard, you will find out you cannot do this. However, if you get someone at the registers who doesn't know this rule or cares, then, yes.
This is exactly what I did recently when we received a "Coles" gift card and wanting to turn it into a Cole Myer Gift Card. I just went to the register that was being served by an uninterested looking 16 year old. He didn't even blink an eyelid.
I've had success at both Target and Woolworths with converting gift cards but I agree that it varies depending on which staff member you get.
I get Target only gift cards, make a small purchase with them that I wanted anyway and then convert the rest of the value of the card to a Coles Group card.
I also converted part of a Wish card at Woolworths into a smaller denomination gift card of Wish card. I was also buying groceries at the time.
Hasn't Target stopped selling Coles Myers gift cards? I've only ever seen Target only gift cards there lately.
The Coles group and the Coles group plus Myer cards are extremely difficult to find at Target but I have managed to get them. Most of the easy ones to see and reach are the Target only cards. Several times I have had to get the customer service staff to find the Coles Myer cards and give them to the register staff.
They're usually near the cash registers.

Coles Cards - Buy at Coles or Kmart
Woolies - Woolies or Big W.
As Djones said, get the attendant to put it through at the self serve (if you're having problems), then pretend to rummage through your wallet or purse until they leave, and pay using your GCs
Yeah I might do that. I have quite a few gift cards that I really want to just consolidate.
Just bought $250 DJ gc with $250 wish card. Also got 220 QFF points, so yay.
Call it serendipity, but I had myself asking this question to the girl at the counter this exact question at coles this evening.
Yes, you can buy other gift cards with your coles card. I'd assume you can do this in woolies as well.
