  • Key to taking good photographs is to understand and have the ability to adjust the different aspects which when combined will give you the perfect exposure.
A DSLR should help you achieve that.

However, point and shoot cameras do take some really good pictures. But has limitation related to what and when you are taking pictures of.

If you could tell us what she would take pictures of, we will be able to guide you better.

    Cheers.

Sony RX-100. No camera that fits in your pocket takes better photos under $500.

    • OP never asked for pocketable. Try the ILCE-3000 Sony.. APSC sensor ftw.

    • I've been considering this.

It is sold for about 450 at kogan while still around 600 elsewhere. Kogan one doesnt give sony warranty, thats the difference I think.

Would anyone recommend for/against buying from kogan/grey import?

  • camera doesn't matter so much it the lens get a cheap second hand dlsr and maybe a 17-50mm tamron f2.8 depending on what she is taking pictures of. $500 doesn't give you much to play with when talking about dslrs. maybe have a look at a compact system camera or alternatively the sony as mentioned above or maybe a panasonic lumix fz200 if she needs the zoom. also the panasonic lx7 could be worth considering. but the last two mentioned have a smaller sensor size (lower quality pictures) but good lenses. im sure there are other cameras by different brands that are also as good e.g nikon, fuji, canon, olympus etc etc.

    • also get a copy of perfect photo you can pick it up pretty cheap on many torrent sites. it's this program that'll probably bring out the most of your photo's when used correctly.

  • Sorry. I'm in the wrong thread.

I thought you were looking for something to take crappy photos with.

  • I would say in that price range get something from the Sony Nex lineup. Small and portable, easy to use, great image quality for the price & size.

  • I got and recommend a Pentax Q. Hunt around overseas sites such as Amazon UK and you can get this well under $500 with the lens and it has the same functionality as an SLR.

  • Please only get a DSLR! They have much better build quality and will last longer.

Do NOT buy from Kogan. A friend of mine bought a Canon 600D and it arrived with a broken lens. They would not replace it.

I bought a brand new Canon 600D (body only) for $360 at JB hifi in 2012, so chances are you can find the same model even cheaper. Great camera would highly recommend. I got given a lens for it by a family member, but you can pick up ANY canon EF, or EF-S mount lens on ebay (just search EF, or EF-S lens).

Good luck - hope this helps!

    • I accidentally dropped my 1 month old Nokia 1020 in the surf. It was fried, I sent it back to Kogan, told them it was submerged in salt water. They offered immediately to just give me a new one. Then, when their website had none in stock, they instead just refunded every cent to me that I'd paid. They also paid for the return postage. I also bought a $300 coffee machine from them 2 years ago, that broke after 1 month. Same story - full refund, return postage paid - no questions asked. Kogan customer service, for me, has been absolutely epic. I guess we all have different experiences..

  • All above are good suggestions. Again as has been noted, would need more info to work out what might be best - what sort of work is she taking photos of? Is it all for putting on the web? Etc.

Main point - you can get professional looking photos from a toy camera, if you have the skill. You can also take very ordinary photos with a hyper expensive camera & lens if you don't know what you're doing.

Me, I'd also look at something like the entry level DSLRs or Sony NEX/Alpha range with APS-C size sensors. Possibly second hand to save a little money, although the NEX3 is a pretty decent deal at the moment as it's being replaced. Key being you can then also look at getting a cheap prime lens best to take the sorts of photos you want to take. I'd then also invest some money in a course to learn how to use the camera, and maybe (if for example she is taking photos of jewelry etc) getting a light box etc off eBay.

    I love my camera!

Bought it late last year, worth every cent. http://www.ryda.com.au/Canon-Powershot-SX50-HS-Digital-Camer…

    • Awesome price! It's a good little camera and produces some very good results.
