This thing is a dinosaur - I retired my 3D LED maglite about 5 years ago.

I only keep it as I think it will be good to beat a home invader with one day.

I bought a Chinese $3 or $4 LED torch (featured on Ozb) a few months ago which seriously runs rings around the giant, cumbersome, heavy 3D mag.

    • How are those cheap ones any better? I've bought all LED torches on Ozb for years and none of them last as long or are as bright as this badboy.

I dunno about those $3-4 torches. They might be bright on day 1, but fall apart very quickly.

A Maglite will last a long time, but if brightness is what you're after, you can definitely find smaller, brighter torches. They usually use 18650 lithium batteries (use only good ones, for tas's sake ;) and can cost $30-80 (up to a few hundred!) depending on quality and brightness.

Maglites have long runtimes, but only because they aren't very bright to begin with. The beam pattern is downright ugly as well, but at least it is focusable from spot to flood.

I only keep mine for emergency use in the car. It's far too impractical and (comparatively) dim for my kind of day-to-day use. I use a Zebralight H600 for that - way brighter, nice clean beam pattern, and head-mountable too.

        • Are you referring to LED Maglites?

        • Yup, the LED ones.
Incidentally, I just found out Maglite changed the LED type from Luxeon to another Luxeon to Cree some time during their life cycle. I haven't seen the Cree ones, they might look better than my Luxeon.

          edit: http://www.led-resource.com/2010/01/maglite-led-flashlight-r…

Based on the 131 lumen reading, this COTD 3D Maglite uses the newer Cree XP-E LED. That's good, but 131 lumens is incredibly low for the size of the torch if brightness is the main priority.

The torch below is rated at 2500 lumens. I haven't read any reviews on this new model yet, so I'm not sure if it's really 2500 lumens. The previous model was rated at 2000 lumens which was accurate.

  • I bought two. I already one of them. I don't know why I bought two. I think I have officially lost it.

    • +4

If you have officially lost it, the second (or third) one will come in handy
      ;)

    • Don't leave us hanging mate, if it's officially AWOL/MIA be sure to confirm it with us.

  • Thanks storyteller. Bought two.
I expect Maglite quality which has always been brilliant.

  • Got one thanks.

  • Seems it has been extended for another 24 hours.

  • Just received mine. Will test it out once I get back home from work. :)

  • got mine today, but seems eneloop adapters are not working with this flashlight, need a bigger disc shaped metal at the end for the spring to touch.
seems like this one will work.
