Wow, our family loves Fiji, and I'm very jealous!

Fit in a day trip to one of the islands - only there you can see the white sands and crystal blue waters. You can catch a ferry from Port Denarau, and depending on the package, they can serve you lunch there and you have free use of water sports and snorkelling gear for the afternoon.

Suva is nice to visit for a day trip but it's a veeery long bus ride (it's literally on the other side of the mainland). You can do some shopping in the malls, see the markets and also visit the museum.

There's not much in terms of shopping, unless you want arts and crafts - there should be plenty of markets and stuff around Nadi or if you go do a village tour they will usually end up with with craft stalls to peddle their goods. Be wary of wood and untreated stuff though - customs usually confiscate them. We bought some nice bongo drums as a souvenir and they got taken away.

Do visit a traditional village if you can - last time we went we got to see a school, and then have a kava ceremony with the village chief.

Look out for a meke show / night as well - sometimes the resorts will do a lavish buffet dinner and meke show combo, or maybe in a village as well. It's basically a cultural show, lots of singing and dancing; I remember they had firewalking with ours too.

There are also lots of adventure type activities, like swimming with the sharks, zip line, boat rides, river tours - just visit and book at the travel desk at the resort.

In terms of bargains - resort food is pretty much the same as Australian restaurant prices… so it adds up a bit. But you can do a big buffet breakfast, skip lunch or maybe nab a few rolls or muffins or fruit from the buffet to tide you over till dinnertime. If you venture outside the resorts to the local town though, you can find really cheap food.

    Hope that helps!

    • Thanks so much cuteseal
      Excellent advice

      • No worries, enjoy your trip!
Do report back after… keen to hear your experiences!

  • If you can get out of staying in the resort all the time, book a multiple day excursion to the Yasawa or Mamanuca Islands. The main island of Viti Levu is tame in comparison.
